Watched several old horror movies over the Halloween weekend.

At our Halloween party Saturday night, after having difficulty deciding among several possibilities, at the last minute I happened to notice the original The Evil Dead in our DVD stash, and the choice was made.  It's loads of fun, and sounds great with the subwoofer cranked:

Later, my wife and I watched several older horror flicks, trying to find ones we hadn't seen before.  I'd seen a couple of these, but several were new to us:

Horror of Dracula (1958)

Curse Of The Demon (1958)

The Seventh Victim (1943)

The Black Room (1935)

The Devil Bat (1941)


All of these were enjoyable... and The Devil Bat was gloriousy cheesy.

I've got a couple of those "50 movie bundles!" made up of B lot sci-fi and horror films. So far I think that The Amazing Petrified World was my favorite sci-fi and Moon of the Wolf was the biggest gem so far in the horror list. One interesting thing is that Blood Tide (featuring James Earl Jones) is in both the Sci-Fi and Horror collections. So I have 2 copies of it... lol

Pretty good movie, hilarious at times, too. Never read the book, but I still recommend it w/o reading the book; my guess is that it wouldn't spoil the ending.

Captain America: 8/10.

Pretty fun movie to watch.  Only complaint was the ending.  It would make sense to end it differently but then they would need a real CA sequel before they could make The Avengers.

Super 8 - 3/10

This movie had multiple personality disorder. It's like spielberg decided that he needed to remake goonies... except he made it more like ruskies. He then added elements of cloverfield, sprinkled in a tiny amount of ET, added some of The Hulk (2003), tried to turn it into tremors, only to leave off with the love child of black hawk down and phenomenon.


Besides the extreme inconsistent nature of the film, it was really poor quality. You can't say that it was at least big budget because if that thing cost more than $1000 to produce, then somebody is embezzling that production budget. Script was aweful. Acting was held hostage by the script. The camera angles were disgustingly bad. (especially since the camera shook THE ENTIRE MOVIE!!!!!!)

I can only say one good thing about this movie. The setting (for the few scenes where it stayed in the goonies remake genre) was extremely well put together. You actually felt like you were in the small town. Like as if you were standing on the street corner looking around. You get to feel like you are actually there.... for about 3 scenes...

Spy Kids: All the Time in the World: 9/10

Same message as the previous three: enjoy your family.  Same basic plot idea: two kids who don't know a parent is a spy and end up saving their parents and the world.  Still very fun to watch.  As usual, good CGI (that company just gets better and better), good acting and the kids loved it.  I enjoyed it (kids got it from an 8 to a 9).   Good over-the-top jokes when they're funny.  Alexa Vegas is pretty hot now too.

Tron: Legacy? I thought it was kinda dumb personally. Not much more than an attempt to rehash an old decent movie for the purpose of making money rather telling a good story. "Oooooo we can use updated CGI effects! Everyone will flock to the theaters like sheep! We can make video games and action figures! MONEY IN THE BANK!" Yeah, that kinda thing. It wasn't completely horrible, but there was nothing really original in it.

Conan (2011)

Before I rate it, I can't compare it to the original. So I'm going to pretend that it is in fact a remake Beast Master or Red Sonja...

This generic barbarian movie that had nothing to do with Conan was awesome. I hope that they continue to make more generic barbarian movies not based on Conan. Because the world needs more generic barbarian films, especially ones that are not remakes of Conan. So this guy who was not named Conan killed a lot of people and was a general bad ass. It was extremely inventive and very cool by way of the action, that no person named Conan took part in. This movie was definitely the best generic barbarian movie that is not a remake of Conan that I have seen in a very long time.

I hope that they make more movies that are not Conan!

Awesome movie; excellent cinematography.  It's half documentary, half dramatic re-enactment about 2 British mountain climbers that attempt a route up a 21,000 ft, South American mountain that has never been completed.  They encounter some pretty incredible challenges along the way, and the movie details these challenges.  You discover early on into the documentary that they both survive, but had you just watched the events unfold as they happened, you probably wouldn't believe it.

Anyway, great movie, absolutely worth checking out.  Oh, and don't read the synopsis; it gives too many details about what difficulties they run into, and I believe it will be more compelling to just watch the events take place as they happen.
