Spoiler alert!!!  This movie is slow to start but for sure not bad at all.  You have to have a brain to enjoy this movie.  If you're more into brainless movies, go watch American Pie Reunion.

Silent House - 2012 - 7/10 - A psychological thriller about a young girl who is helping her dad & uncle fix up their old family home, but strange things keep happening.  The movie starts with her sitting on a rock by a lake in the middle of a forest, miles away from anywhere.  She walks back to her house, and runs into an old friend who she can't seem to remember.  They talk for a while and then they part ways for a bit.  She goes inside and continues to wander about, but starts hearing noises like they're someone else in the house.  She brushes it off at first.  Her uncle has to leave to go into town, so she stays to help her father fix up the house in the meantime.  Sounds keep making themselves more apparent until they are non-ignorable (which btw, only she is hearing...her father hears nothing).  She gets her father to help her look around upstairs...

She is attacked and her father ends up bludgeoned almost to death.  She escapes, and the person running around in the house seems all-powerful and able to stay completely hidden.  She is alone and scared.  She tries escaping but all the doors are locked from the inside and there are no keys anywhere.  She hears the man coming after her, she hides scared out of her mind, while the figure keeps lurking ever closer to her, chasing her all throughout the house, upstairs, back downstairs, then down to the cellar where she gets trapped.  During this time, the evil man drags and dumps the body of her father down here, and returns upstairs, then comes back downstairs because he noticed her hiding, and starts tearing apart the door of the room she locked herself in.  The cellar has a back doorway which leads to the lower part of the backyard, and she uses a key (found one at this point) to escape.  She runs through the woods until she runs into her uncle returning from town.  She tells him about what happened, so he goes inside looking for the dark man, pistol loaded.  He tells her to wait in the car.  Outside, the car's rear loading door opens.  The figure is standing there, looking at the girl, who is now trembling in fear and runs for her life inside the house to find her uncle.  When she goes inside, her uncle tells her he can't find the man or her father anywhere.  They look and look, but nothing.  They keep searching and get separated in different rooms upstairs.  A loud crash is heard, and her uncle, now unconscious, is now being dragged slowly away by the mysterious figure.  She is in hell.

This is where the movie gets good.  She is able to escape downstairs because the evil man drug her uncle to the cellar.  She's hiding under the dining table, and god no, she hears the evil man dragging her uncle back into the dining room.  She's scared as the dragging sound inches ever so closer and louder, and she LOOKS UP!  Yet she's not under the table.  It's her, dragging her uncle's body, putting it right next to her father's whom is tied up.  She thought she was being chased but it was all in her mind.  She was doing all of it all along.  Suddenly her friend is back, telling her that she knows why this is really happening.  She attacks her friend, and her friend tells her to stop attacking herself.  She looks at her friend's hand, which has a cut in it, but she looks at her own hand...same exact cut.

During the movie, pictures keep being found randomly, but it doesn't show you of what.  Her father and uncle put these pictures up as soon as they find them as well.  At the end, it shows you what they are...pictures of her father having sex with her...while her uncle snapped the photos.  She ends up foolishly letting her father go, and he smacks her to the floor.  Then her uncle actually tries to be a good guy and tells his brother to stop, so the father goes over and starts beating on him.  Foolish move, because a sledgehammer is now in her hand...and she bludgeons her father to death, complete Gallagher-watermellon style.  She nearly does her uncle in, but he's pleading and saying how sorry he is, so she lets him live, and walks away emotionless and drained into the woods...

A very cold movie for sure.  The only reason I didn't give it a 9 or 10 (as I do most psychological thrillers) is because I didn't think her uncle should've been left alive.  He deserved to die as well.  And the movie was just a hair TOO slow, but not intolerable for sure.  Guess you can't have everything.

Wow, just realized that review was HUGE.  My bad, rofl.  I'll remember to conflate in the future.

Not sure if these movies have been mentioned in this thread, but these are really excellent IMO:

Inception (2010) - 10/10 - Excellent storyline woven into the ideas of what really is "real" or dream.  Makes you question if existence is really just a game we play in our heads, and we're all just asleep dreaming this reality.  Very intense and emotional.  Another psychological thriller.  Also the music was excellent throughout (Hans Zimmer is the man).

Law Abiding Citizen - 10/10 - 2009 - Another good heady one.  Story about a man betrayed by the justice system after his wife and daughter are raped and murdered in front of him, so he spends 10 years learning how to bring the law to its knees.  Accurately depicts how District Attorneys choose a high conviction rate over actually doing what's right.  All throughout this movie, I couldn't help but cheer him on in his insanity...if that shit happened to me, I'd probably do something similar.  Wouldn't have anything left to live for, just like him, that's for sure.

Demetia (1955)

Watched this a few nights ago at 3 in the morning, it's a silent movie, whilst listening to Bohren und der Club of Gore.
About a girl traveling through the Hollywood streets by night, has a dreamlike/noir feel to it.
Amazing experience, can't recommend it enough, especially when you supply your own 'dreamy/slow' soundtrack.

So I saw Hunger Games yesterday and I'd give it a 7/10.  If I was comparing it to the book, a 3/10.

7 because it SEEMED to short.  Things seemed rushed.  It wasn't short, from start to finish a little over two hours, but it SEEMED like things went by to fast for you to absorb them in through most of the movie.  The love ploted plot (not a typo) seemed like it was just thrown in there, they could of removed the whole "act like you're in love" thing and it would of made more sense.  I thought the scenes with the carrier tributes was spot on though.  They had those kids seem like they were little more then Predators (from the movie) then kids.  Also to the movies credit I like how they had the announcers explain what would of been Katniss's thoughts during the game (what's that, where did this come from, who are they, etc).  The violence/gore was greatly toned down from the book (I was wondering how they would handle that).  Imagine turning off gibbing in Q3A & you have what they did to it (I don't think people would want to see someone's flesh splitting open, leaking fluids and falling off the bone while a weapon is being wrestled from them).

To compare it to the book, the biggest disappointment was how "culturally acceptable" they made District 12 seem.  I know they changed some things to make it in to a movie and keep it shorter (the three book series is pretty much an autobiography/diary which would be hard to make in to a movie), added/deleted some characters, put things from different POV's (in the book you get nothing but the main characters view, you don't know what anyone else is thinking/doing until she knows), changed/added/removed scenes, etc. but District 12 & it's people are nothing I pictured them to be.  From the book itself I assumed they lived in something more like a Mexican or Chinese style slum city (but higher quality vs other down trodden Districts), they don't own razors (all men/young men are clean shaved except if they wanted beards, all women seem to be body-hairless except for Western cultural norms), "clean" means you're just covered in coal dust, things like that.

I'd imagine a recut (ala Lord of the Rings) could be ~4 hours long and I believe I'd prefer that to this one.  However, just like the latest Hitchhikers film, the author worked on the screenplay so I'd assume it was (within reason) acceptable to them.  It's a movie, not a book, after all.

despite giving it a 1000000000000000000000000000000000000/10, i would agree with everything you said. i'm just too hunger games fanboy blinded to rate it any lower  :grinelectric:

I think, ultimately, you're never going to be able to expect a book to movie, movie to be up to the same standard, literature is just that much more engaging I find for those who do read, but I don't know I just loved every second of it.

I don't hate book adaptions really, I thought Hunt for Red October was an amazing movie (and book) and so was Jurassic Park.

I'm not a fanboy but I am a fan of the series.  I thought the second book was the better then the first an am designing a Quake 2 map on the 75th games arena.  :D

saw it again today (this time with a guy, not a lady! :( ) still loved it. every seat in the cinema jolted backwards a bit when the muttation jumped out the bush, even mine and I knew it was coming haha! I definitely feel it should be LONGER and GORIER though. Definitely worth seeing, whether you've read the books or not. if you have the choice though, I would read the books AFTER.

I refuse to see that movie. For the same reason that I refuse to read the book. My nutty fuckin' midlife crisis aunt got my mom into reading the Twilight books, and they went to see all the damn Twilight movies the second they opened. My mom was even trying to get me to read the damn books. Finally my old lady rented the first Twilight movie one night and asked me to watch it with her, so I did, and yeah, all my assumptions were confirmed, nothing but a bunch of WB networkish CRAP. Fuckin girly teenage retarded bullshit that completely ruins every idea Bram Stoker ever had when he wrote Dracula. And when my mom got done with the plethora of Twilight books, then my aunt got her to read Hunger Games, and once again, mom tries talking me into reading that one too. So all I can assume is that it's just as fucking retardedly teenaged as Twilight was. And what further helps me adopt that assumption is that every damn night after the news goes off, Entertainment Tonight comes on (my old lady watches that boring garbage nightly), and without fail, every time they mention anything Hunger Games, it's proceeded by more talk about some Twilight crap. If they're that closely related, then it has to suck 2000 pound whale dick.
