The Invention Of lying 2/10
Boring, unfunny, and tries WAY too hard.
Heh. Rented this a few weeks ago. I enjoyed it, but, i had also skimmed a dozen or so reviews on rottentomatoes prior to renting the movie, so my expectations were tempered a bit beforehand.
Still, any of the movie's flaws were entirely redeemed by its effortless deconstruction of the origins of Abrahamic monotheism, which were obviously 100% accurate.
(Personally what I liked least about the movie was the generic cotton candy music score.)

I didn't mention the religion aspect of it because it was just dumb. Every good sci-fi movie challenges religion and goes about it in an intelligent way. The invention of lying just did a lame stand up act as if the topic was the same as swapping fish stories. It's not particularly offensive, just badly tacked on with no actual understanding of the impact of the topic at hand. It's as if Jeff Foxworthy started telling 9/11 based jokes in the middle of his act and couldn't understand why the audience walked out. Like it or not, there is a such thing as bad taste.
On that note:
Whiteout 7/10
A decent movie all around. There were some snafus like not correctly displaying the concept of cold exposure, but as far as bloopers go they were all very minor compared to typical movies. The only thing that makes this movie 7 instead of a 10 is the ending is incredibly anti-climactic. In fact you're fairly certain that what you're watching can't be a real ending until the credits roll, then you're just disappointed.
The rest of the film makes up for that, but it would have been much better even if it was just some generic alien plot. Instead it was a generic murder plot with no depth. It did remind me a lot of John Carpenter's: The Thing. They put a hell of a lot of effort to get the audience into the right frame of mind and it just plain worked and worked well. It just needed aliens, or cavemen! In fact just show Brendan Fraser killing Pauly Shore in a 5 minute short film. That'd be pretty cool too.

The Box 5/10
This is one of those short stories adapted into a film that may have been a great short story but had an obvious fate as a film. Imagine taking a short story and stretching it out into a novel, or converting it into an epic poem. Heck, just make it a haiku and get it over with. Arbitrarily converting a story from one medium to another for no good reason will get you mixed results. Some good, some bad.
So this movie was an older style story made as a tribute to the Twilight Zone. It has the same set-up and twisted message. This is done perfectly for the first half of the movie. Then a great inspiration for an episode of the twilight zone is dragged into oblivion and turns into 0/10. So I'm averaging out the two sides into a 5. In the first half the characters are isolated, presented with a moral choice, and then shown the consequences. A creepy mood is established and an excellent ending is presented.
Then they insert Contact style aliens with a watered down flavor of The Day The Earth Stood Still. This ruins the entire set up by taking away the isolation, expanding the consequences to be irrelevant, and then explaining the ending away with an illogical conclusion. The 50's B lot movie plot that is introduced is never finished so instead of leaving the ending wide open like they do halfway through, they close all of the doors and then replace it with an unfinished story as if it's the same thing.
They took lots of risks (like expecting us to believe that Cameron Diaz and Cyclops are serious actors) which mostly paid off, and then they gave up taking risks and melted down to generic movie hell.

I'm never nearly positive enough, so I'm reserving this post for positive reviews
Ninja 10/10
no plot, all killing.
Zombieland 10/10
One of the few truly perfect movies. Everything was right, nothing went wrong.
Interception 10/10
I'm sure I've mentioned this before but this is the best low budget action movie of all time. It's just ridiculous and hilarious all at the same time. It's crazy low budget and has a few really bad actors, but
Buck Rodgers
is my personal hero!

In honor of Chuck Norris' birthday:
Forced Vengence 9/10
I have to give it a 9 because of the uneccessary rape scene. I mean it was implied and not specifically gratuitous, but I prefer movies that stick to regular violence. Sexual assault is just not the kind of "action" that I have in mind when I think of an action movie.
But it's Chuck Norris so all is good!
On to the Hitman!
(Note: I had these movies netflixed long before I realized that today was his birthday. So don't think that I don't watch my regular prescription of roundhouse kicks to the face!)

Scarface - 8/10. I found it a bit long winded and watched it in two parts. Was great though.

Being John Malkovich
I won't even rate it. One seriously fucked up movie. I loved the part where John Malkovich himself went through his own portal and everyone in the restaurant looked like John Malkovich (even the women), everything on the menu was John Malkovich, and the only words ever spoken were "John Malkovich."

One-Eyed Monster - .01/10
This is one of the worst ideas for a movie in the history of mankind. These people go up to the mountains to make a porno movie. Ron Jeremy gets hit with some alien shooting star while taking a piss outside. The alien somehow takes control of his dick. His dick comes off and starts flying around killing everyone. Really super duper cheesy shit. Although it did have some amusing scenes. Especially the part where Charles Napier is talking about an alien dick back in Vietnam killing his whole platoon. I wish I could find a sound clip of the part where he says, "Hell? You haven't seen Hell until you've seen 30 men...
KILLED BY A DICK!!

Shutter Island
Engaging, well-crafted psychological thriller. Nice sound design as well.

IMAX Hubble 3D
The trailer is here:
http://www.universetoday.com/2010/01/15/hubble-imax-3-d-trailer/
....but it doesn't even show even a glimpse of what I thought were the coolest parts of the movie, where they'd mapped hubble imagery, as textures, onto a somewhat 3D model, and rendered some awesome fly-throughs, such as the Orion nebula, where numerous stars are being born, and have "tadpole" like trails as they're being blasted by a 5 million mph cosmic wind from a nearby larger star, etc.
