It's kind of like the Val Kilmer version of Island of Dr. Mareau without the beasts. People are isolated on an island and told to behave a certain way for their own good. A series of unfortunate events happen and the security officer gets what he deserves. It also reminded me of those Saturday-night matinee shows where they tell a simple ghost story with a poignant ending. Well not always poignant but it tells a complete story and uses a lot of visuals to infer more advanced ideas and emotions than the simple dialog allowed.

Seventh Moon 3/10
This is the first really bad movie that I have bothered to finish in quite some time. Most times when I start a movie that I know I'll hate, I turn it off before I get too worked up by the fact that I'm wasting money/time on something that I would never want to watch in the first place. The setup, premise, and mood was pretty good.
It's about the chinese myth that the dead come back to eat the living so they have to make food sacrafices to keep themselves safe. I don't know if it's a real myth but this is the second movie that I've seen that is based on the myth. What happens is that the main characters venture into an area where these ghost/demons are roaming free and they have to run and hide from the demons using very limited knowledge of the problem at hand.
There are 3 huge flaws with the execution, however. #1 shaky cameras are good for short action sequences but not an entire movie! #2 there is a difference between withholding vital plot information from the main characters and audience for the purpose of creating an air of mystery and confusion, and just plain making people disappear and then reappear at the end without an appropriate amount of concern or explanation as to why they disappeared or how they came back. Also making that person into the badguy at the last minute because you needed one and couldn't decide earlier doesn't help. #3 Amy Smart should stick to comedy!
Thaw 4/10
A reasonable remake of Cabin Fever with a hint of The Thing's isolation with a giant gorilla of an agenda sitting on it's back. If you just fastforward to about the 30 minute mark and start from there, then this is a pretty good film. About a 8/10. Generic but still fun with a GOOD twist at the end, not a badly tacked on one.
The first 30 minutes replaces a good setup with a non-sensical rant trying to explain why terrorist groups like ELF are right and how we're all a bunch of Neanderthals because we don't live in huts and forage for food (some-what ironic, ain't it?). I compared it elsewhere to 28 days later. A really good reinvention of zombie movies using eco/animal rights extremists as the plot device without having to defend their cause. You can compare it to other horror movies too and see the difference. For example Poltergeist does not spend the first 30 minutes on real estate investing tips. Friday The 13th didn't include a instructional video on swiming, or hockey. It really was absolutely out of place in this movie and polarized it to only appeal to the extreme side of an ongoing argument. I'm waiting for a sequel that says OJ was innocent and that Nicole was killed by vampires. That won't polarize the audience either!

I just finally saw Avatar, and thought it was awesome. I watched it on my computer. Can't wait to watch it on Blu-ray on a big screen.

The Book of Eli - 7/10
some good fighting scenes, the overall plot was pretty good, it just left me feeling quite empty at the end, felt like there should have been more to it.

Cirque de freak 6/10, entertaining at most times, but too childish and simple.
Blood and Bone 7.2/10, nice action and coo to see a black guy kickin everyones ass instead of some asian, story is quite weak, however the acting isnt too bad, alot of people you know are in this movie and you will probably enjoy watching it.

The Fourth Kind 7/10
Very similar to Fire in the Sky as far as content goes. I really enjoyed it. To get one thing straight, the entire story is fake. Sorry to ruin it, but just like fargo, Texas Chainsaw Massecre, and Free Willy... someone eventually has to break it to you that it's not a true story. They just say that in order to improve ratings.
Anyway... it had a really good mash-ups of the "evidence" with the dramatizations and the suspense progressed in a very cool way. It wasn't bogged down by being just another lame attempt to rip off Cloverfield's fame. It really told a story in a familiar documentary style. The best part is that it was not another lame popout scare movie. It was more classic and pretty original. All in all it was cool.
There were some issues that could have been handled better. The introduction is Milla Jovovich telling the audience in an extremely cheesy way "These are real events... yadda yadda yadda". It lowers the quality to that of a Discovery channel special and done in such a way that it proves to the audience that it has to be all fake. The second problem is the ending. There is a scene that is such a "blair-ing" rip off. (the blair witch, get it? lol) Also, the police officer is extremely emotional and unprofessional. All of those things subtract from the film but don't ruin it.
All claims of aliens are bogus, but the occasional alien abduction movie is always a good watch.

Saw "The Wolfman" (the one from this year) last night. The special effects were good. Was a little dull/slow at times. Lots of gore, and creative/enjoyable gore too. I enjoyed it.
Watched "My Bloody Valentine", from 2009 I believe, tonight. TONS of gore, and again, some quite unique methods of death. Acting wasn't that great, but overall it wasn't that horrible. Most cheesy horror movies suck, but this one was worth watching.
Oh, saw "Pandorum" in the past 2-3 weeks, and I enjoyed that a good bit. Good mix of sci-fi with some good horror/gore mixed in.

Watched "Stranger Than Fiction" last night. It stars Will Ferrell, but is nothing like what you'd typically expect from a Will Ferrell movie. It definitely had it's moments where I was cracking up, but that's not the focus of this movie. Will Ferrell does a fantastic job as the main character. Acting is top notch across the board.
