Alien has no gore though, except the one scene. W/o the gore what makes it a horror movie vs a suspense?

I think that we have some difference in terms. In my book there are 4 real genres of movies. Drama, Action, Comedy, and horror. Suspense is a sub-genre of horror (or sometimes a sub-genre of drama). Of horror, there are sub-genre's. Gorey, suspense/thrillers, etc.. So I'm not convinced that the lack of gore makes a movie any less horror. That would automatically re-classify the entirety of the Twilighzone, Vincent Price movies, and classic horrors like Dracula, the mummy, and the Haunting.

In all honesty that's my opinion. Horror is a broad genre. Stupid slashers like My Bloody Valentine and great sci-fi horrors like John Carpenters The Thing all fall into the same category. Oddly enough you'll realize just how many of them involve an extremely contrived effort to isolate a group of people and kill them off one by one once you really think about it. Then there are Rear Window in which a single killer toys with a single victim and the climax in the end is attempting to kill that person. Then there's the action horror like John Carpenters Vampires, that is just a classic horror monster tacked into an action film. Then there's the psychological thriller that involves one person wrestling with demons/ghosts which reveals an unoriginal twist at the end. Then there's the Lost Boys category where a group of kids is tormented by an unknown force which they identify and confront. Sorry I'm just going through some fond memories of The Thing and The Haunting. I love the good old horror movies.

My favorite types of horror involve an unknown force that is revealed slowly throughout the film and then dealt with at the end within the rules that have been established. Like the Ninth Gate.

Hellraiser 1, 2, and 3 were decent. Admittedly, some of the actors they cast for the less important characters were either really crappy actors or the director just didn't take the time to coach them and get the scene on tape correctly. But Ashley Laurence, the girl who played Kirstey, HOLY HELL she's a total fox. Not the most talented actress ever, but her "oh shit, I'm scared" face cut the mustard and is probably the biggest reason she got the part. Hellraiser: Bloodlines, #4, was just incredibly retarded, painful to watch, and totally sucked. There's 8 movies in the entire Hellraiser series, believe it or not. Basically, don't watch anything past Hellraiser 3 unless you're a big Clive Barker fan already. Like Peewee touched on, the last few seemed to "borrow" their plots from other films.

She's getting up there in age, so she ain't quite as deliciously fresh as she used to be (Hellraiser was like 20 years ago), but still...

I liked the hell raiser movies...

I like movies ilke seven and the bone collector, mystery horror shit...but not those bullshit movies like urban legend, scream, and whatever else.

I liked Hellraiser 4 because it continued the plot of the cube that is a portal to hell. Hellraiser's 2 and 3 kind of abandoned that plot for the sake of going to the hood and killing more people. Although Hellraiser 3 was by far the best, and one of the most influential gore movies in horror history.

I saw Hellraiser 6 before watching 5. They have the exact same plot with the different characters. I just happen to like it. It wasn't a gore movie or really about demons. It was a psychological thriller in the vein of In The Mouth of Madness or Dark Corners. I just liked it. I can't imagine how a diehard fan of the original Hellraisers could ever like it, but I did.

well sure it wasn't the most epic of storylines but I didn't really go watching it for that, it's a dance film I watched good dancing that wasnt quite as cheesey as Step Up dancing (except the white guys in their rivals group jesus I wanted to shank them), so to me that's my idea of a good film.

same with disaster movie, it's fucking retarded plot-wise but if you watch it expecting a decent storyline with meaning and depth you're watching the wrong film, take em for what they are.

I just got done watching #5, Hellraiser: Inferno. I gotta agree, it was pretty damn good considering it was straight-to-DVD. Threw me for a big loop. Wasn't like the first four at all. I give it 8 out of 10 severed fingers.
