It's a Free World (2007)

I knew nothing about this beforehand... good movie, but didn't go in the direction I was expecting at first.

The only info I had going in was, "After being fired from her job, Angie teams with her friend to find employment for immigrants."

I don't want to spoil the plot... I think not even knowing vaguely how it will turn out is probably the best way to see it.

Wow. I'm SOOOOOOO glad I've never seen this entire movie. Or maybe I wish I did... I'm not sure. This particular scene is probably one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life. It's soooooo horribly acted that it's positively fucking hilarious.

The last part of it is the real kicker. Yes, this actually a porn video site because this scene does have nudity in it. So be aware, don't watch this at the office.

indiana jones crystal skull - 7/10 (i like indiana jones and harrison ford tho, so 9/10)
eagle eye - 6/10 (end is zz)
zac and miri make a porno - 6/10 (black dude in movie = 10/10)
007 quantum solice - 8/10
defiance - 9/10 (even tho they are jewish...)
appaloosa - 8/10 ( was drunk, still decent )
max payne - 7/10 (drunk = 9/10 and Valkyrie...oh how i miss dael and his norse bitch ass)

That page names a place called San Paolo, which I'm wondering if they meant Sao Paulo. I have a friend who came from there, she was married to an American for a time. When they went back to Brazil, they were basically robbed at gunpoint by the police. They locked her husband up after falsely accusing him of drug possession/distribution (drugs which THEY planted on him) and labeled him a white supremacist, and then took her to an ATM at gunpoint and forced her to withdraw all of the money from their accounts. He was released from prison a week or two later. Shortly thereafter, he divorced her.

No, as much fun as Carnival looks like, I think I'd rather keep my happy white ass right here in GA where it's always been.

There was another movie I saw a month or so ago that dealt with that same subject. Some bank manager's son was kidnapped by a paramilitary group that demanded a ransom. The PI sent to deliver the ransom money was stopped and detained by police on his way to the drop-off point, so the kidnappers ended up executing him at the end of the movie. But you don't find out until the very end that the person charged with the task of executing him happens to be one of his long-time friends. She kills him and then turns the gun on herself... and the movie is over. Not a happy ending. But a very good movie nonetheless. I wish I could remember the name of it.

YES! I'm thoroughly disgusted by all of these "horror" movies that are released these days. 99% of them are rated PG-13 because the studios know that their best chance at making the most profits means allowing for younger teens to buy tickets. I miss the good ole days when there was gore and blood and severed pulsating limbs and all manners of special effects makeup. They aren't even "scary" anymore. It's like as long as it takes place primarily at night, it's labelled "horror". If I see the previews on TV and it tries to come across as a "horror" movie... and I'm truly thinking to myself, "Hmm, that might be cool.", I wait until the end of the commercial. If I hear, "This film is rated PG-13", I make a mental note that it will suck 10-pound bags of donkey balls, and I make damn sure I never watch it.

Speaking of trends in "horror" movies, I see the same trend in ALL movies these days. There are fewer R rated pictures than there used to be. I'm not saying that a movie HAS to have adult content to be good, but I get the feeling that a lot of these screenplays are being butchered by producers in order to achieve that PG-13 rating and thus generate more profits. It's starting to make the whole movie-going scene a little stale and unattractive. The big studios and the MPAA have quite a firm grasp on the balls of the creativity of these younger filmmakers. They can suppress their vision and ideas and insert their own gaudy substitutions in the screenplays. Or they can simply refuse to review the film and provide a rating, which means that your film will probably never reach a wide audience. It's politics, politics, politics ...and it sucks. I think there's plenty of GOOD material out there, studios just aren't willing to take a chance on it. Which brings me to my next observation...

When watching the SuperBowl tonight, I noticed a few commercials for upcoming films. Land of the Lost. Star Trek. Old shit. "Hey, why go out on a limb and try something new... when we can just repackage this OLD shit and forcefeed it to people. They've been eating it for years, so we already know they'll swallow it willingly." Star Trek was fine. Let's ass-rape it into oblivion though by tarnishing the memory of the old movies with some new crap that won't have the same feel and appeal to it. They did it with Batman. The first Batman movie with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson was pretty good. But no, these movie studios can't just have ONE GOOD movie, they have to be greedy and chase the living shit out of your every last dollar, wrestle it to the ground, and shove their greedy money-grabbing dicks down your throat until you gag and puke. They've ALL been complete crap compared to the original one. Why? Because originality is what classics are made of. I've also noticed that a few of these new movies are using the old gimmick of 3D to get some tickets sold and warm asses in the theater seats. Sure, I think it's a great idea, they SHOULD be making 3D movies... in fact they SHOULD'VE been doing it ALL ALONG rather taking such a long respite from it. It's not like IMAX theaters are the only screens capable of showing 3D movies. Even your TV screen can handle it.

At any rate, I think Hollywood needs a big change in their practices. To quote Jack Nicholson as the Joker in Batman, "WHAT THIS TOWN NEEDS IS AN ENEMA!"

Yeah, it was a typo in the review. The spelling according to Wikipedia is São Paulo. (How in the world is a tilde over an 'a' pronounced?

Apparently on average a person a day in that city is being kidnapped in broad daylight, yanked out of their cars at traffic lights, etc. [[edit: the wikipedia page is claiming they are starting to get this more under control]]

The kidnappers are cutting off so many victims' ears (apparently more popular than fingers and toes) and mailing them to the families with the ransom demands, that plastic surgeons specializing in ear reconstruction in that region are living in palatial estates.

Companies that convert factory issue autos into armored semi-bulletproof vehicles are also doing brisk business (as I recall the review had also mentioned.)

I thought the documentary director and editor(s) did an admirable job tying together a mosaic of systemic government corruption, and contrasting it against the (for lack of a better term) "trickle down" effect this has had on society in various direct and indirect ways.

That and... I suspect anyone who sees this will forever associate the phrase "frog farm" with this movie.

Watched RocknRolla - I enjoyed it, I do like most of Guy Richies stuff. 8/10 for that type of movie.

I watched a 2003 South Korean movie called Old Boy. Hard to label, defies pretty much any category you throw at it. You can see it as a love story, a fight story, a revenge story...but there's nothing quite like it. Ride out the subtitles, brace for the hammer and squirm at the scissors! Nuff said there. Don't worry though -- it's not Audition!
