Just finished watching the entire 10 part series of "Band of Brothers".

11/10.

The special features is definitely worth watching too. Makes me think about all the shit both of my grandfathers went through during World War II. No one ever really got the chance to talk to my moms father about what all he went through in the Pacific during Okinawa. Like a lot of the guys who lived through it, he never talked about those days very much, if ever. It wasn't until after he died in 1996 that a few of his surviving brothers and sisters offered up some small pieces of his memories he had related to them about a few things that happened during his service. My mom gave me his old Army uniform not long after he died, and it's still one of my most prized possessions. I also have a handmade wooden club type of thing that he brought back from Okinawa. That was one of the only stories he ever told us. He used to have it hanging on the wall in his living room and we asked him about it one time. He had gotten up in the middle of the night to take a piss when he ran into a single Japanese soldier who was attempting to sneak into their tents and kill as many US soldiers as he could before being discovered. The only weapon my grandfather had on him was his knife, and luckily the other guy was only carrying a knife too. I still have his knife and leather sheath, although the sheath is in pretty bad shape after all these years. He pointed out the dark red stains on the end of the club where the Japanese soldier had apparently used it to kill someone. After the war, (and this was a boneheaded thing to do on his part) he had painted the entire club up with some kind of clear coating, I don't know why. Maybe one of these days I'll snap a few photos of it if anyone is interested in seeing it.

If any of you have any surviving relatives who actively served in World War II, I'd encourage you to sit down and talk with them about their experiences. They may not be so willing to relive a lot of those memories, but you might find a whole different side of them that you never knew existed. The stories and memories that they carry with them are valuable pieces of history that should be passed on to future generations. Once they pass away, those pieces of history are gone forever. At least tell them how much admiration you have for their service and that you are proud of what they sacrificed and all they endured.

It almost seems like the last generation was stronger to me.  Like they worked twice as hard as we do because things sucked twice as much.  And when they did work, they would do it to the extreme, no question.  I'm not saying we don't have good soldiers now, I just get the apperance that things were a little tougher and people worked harder back in the day.  At least the early and mid 1900's.

my grandparents never said much (one was in WW2, on in korea).  But my dad found an article about his dad's PT boat in WW2.  Turns out one of the survivors of the boat wrote a book.  

I've always wanted to finish seeing Band of Bros (watched ~1/2 the episodes in their first run on TV) but I found it cost-probative to buy them.

I think that this is true too because the invention of the vacuum cleaner, refrigerator, electric stove, radio, microwave, long distance telephones, etc. were part of the "age of convenience." Certain products were introduced and purchased not out of necessity, but out of convenience to spare time for other activities.

Everyone here (myself very much so included) has been born well past the age of convenience and I think it's only reasonable to say that generations following the WWII generation are naturally going to be much more lazy. Cell phones, and text messages are the age of super convenience. It should only get worse from here.

*It should also be noted that some people still work their asses off like the "greatest generation", but I'm talking about averaging the entire population and not any specific individuals*

Star Trek (new one): 8/10

Fun story, the actors fit the characters pretty well.  Hard to mention anything about the plot w/o spoiling it, but worth seeing imho.  Non-trekies I know like it too.

I was a bit lost throughout it, kind of hard to follow in some parts. But definitely go see it! it's not worth $10.25 though, in my opinion.
