Their best album and one of the best albums, imo.

Most Sabbath fans don't want to sound cliche and admit it, but honestly... Paranoid is the best album.

I agree.. its rawness cant just be simply dismissed

I always particularly loved Geezer Butlers contributions to the band and how prominent a role the bass was allowed to play in the mix in all the Sabbath albums with Ozzy. You can clearly make out what the bass is doing at all times. And the way Geezer plays doesn't always match Iommi's guitar. They contrast each other perfectly and there's so much interesting melody at work there. With lots of other bands in the hard rock and metal genre, the bass seems like it's only there because it's expected to be in order to fill up the low end of the sound, and the bass tends to match whatever the rhythm guitar is doing note for note. It's not interesting. With Sabbath, the bass was it's own instrument and it had unique things to say in the music.

Another one of my favourite songs by Sabbath. Aside from the bizarre mixing job (lol) it’s not a bad album. Few would agree but I think the Deep Purple guy and Sabbath could have done some great things together.

Deep Purple guy and Sabbath

Ian Gillan

I kind of thought he was a bad fit. I definitely don't hate his singing though. He's one of the greatest rock vocalists ever in my opinion. I absolutely LOVED all the stuff he did with Deep Purple, and Deep Purple was never better than when he was the vocalist (David Coverdale was pretty good too). But Black Sabbath was just a bit too heavy for his bluesy psychedelic rock style.

This video always kinda makes me laugh at how the audience seems to not really register what they are witnessing - one of the greatest rock bands at their peak giving one of the most brilliant live performances of their entire careers. They're all sitting there stonefaced like they are lost in a maze of confusion and boredom. :D

Thanks man .I could not remember if it was Gilliam or Gillian and was too lazy to look it up, and was wrong either way.

I almost bought a turntable to get back that sound I remember, but since I have no vinyl and any new vinyl is going to be digital rips anyhow; I figured fvck it -plus Youtube Music is so dam awesome too  :headbang:

There's still plenty of shops that deal in old original vinyl. The old Crazy Al's Music that used to sell guitars and stuff up in Commerce GA started selling a good bit of old vinyl. He's basically converted into an antique/consignment kinda business. The guy that operates Big House Guitars has half his store dedicated to old vinyl records. Dunno what the prices on them are. I imagine since more and more people are getting into the hobby, and inflation going nuts lately, records will probably run you about 15 to 20 bucks each now for the more desirable classic stuff. I'd imagine older stuff from the 40's and 50's would probably be more expensive because of how delicate it is. My mom has stories about how her and her sisters would fling my grandpa's old country western records and how they'd shatter into a million pieces because they weren't made of the same flexible stuff like the newer vinyl ones.

For some old stuff, original vinyl is the only medium left where they didn't remix it, like the old ZZ Top records for example. At some point in the 80's, Billy Gibbons remastered and remixed all the great early ZZ Top albums, adding stereo spacial widening to rhythm guitars, etc. There's two versions of Just Got Paid Today: the original album version with mono-mixed rhythm guitar, and the 80's remix with stereo-panned rhythm guitars. It ruins the vibe of the song, in my opinion. Even Deep Purple has remastered Machine Head kinda recently I think, so new versions of that won't sound like the original vinyl.

I have a turntable but it's a little rinky-dink self contained off-brand thing, no audio out or headphone jack on this thing to hook it to any larger decent sounding speakers. So yeah, I need to get a turntable too. If you ever do and find a good one, lemme know. I'm pretty lost. I guess I'll probably need some kind of receiver/amp to run it through. I've seen some little simple and elegant looking ones by Audio Technica on the Guitar Center site, but I'm not sure how function. I want one with a hood that can close over the table while the record plays so you don't have to hear the noise coming directly off the needle at lower volumes.

Ideally, I'd like to find an old original 70's or 80's solid state stereo system like I used to have.  If I .... EVER.... get over this damned covid bullshit, perhaps I can go hitting up some consignment stores and stuff, they have old stereo stuff in those sometimes.

Stumbled upon this on youtube. Never heard of him before. Pretty cool. Other videos show the guitarist dressing up similar to Mork from Mork & Mindy and painting his face like a mime. Yeah. Dunno what that's all about, lol. But the sound is pretty good.

Build Me Up Buttercup was the ending song during the credits of the 1999 film There's Something About Mary. Great song.  Here is one performance of that song with some backup singer on the second tier clapping his hands, almost looking embarrassed or something. Whole Lotta bubblegum...

AI music.  :-\

Dunno how to feel about this. I love Hank Williams Sr. I think he was one of the greatest songwriters and lyricists of all time. I've seen how there are... what I guess are like virtual instrument plugins for modern DAW's (kinda like the Arturia keyboard software I use, and other VST's like that) but are synthetic voices of famous singers like Ozzy Osbourne. The Ozzy one I saw was far from perfect as it took lots of manual editing to get the vibrato and "sliding" notes just right. Doesn't seem like that's what this is though. This one seems to take an existing isolated vocal track and modulate it to sound like Hank Williams Sr. Some of these on this guys channel (he's got several) are from original recordings done by his son Hank Williams Jr, and I suppose the fact that they are so closely related makes it easier to make him sound like his old man. And when you compare the two... you couldn't really hear it before, but suddenly you notice how similar their voices actually are.

Anyway, I don't really like the idea of "fake" music like this, but it's still interesting to hear Hank Sr with a more modern sounding band since 99.99% of his known recordings were done with pretty low quality production (fuzzy sounding drums etc) and no electric instruments other than a lap steel.

edit:

More AI wankery... System of a Down with a fake-as-shit Kurt Cobain. This one sounds broken as hell. :dohdohdoh:
