RIP Billy Joe Shaver. He did the theme song for the animated adult swim show Squidbillies. If you've never seen it, DO SO. It's hilarious!

His son Eddy was one helluva strat player, he died in 2000 from a heroin OD.

Yeah, he don't sound that way anymore. Not even close. He's cooked his pipes crispy with all the years of smoking and drinking and heroin, etc.
I've never been especially fond of him as a singer or lyricist, but the bands he's always been in have been really good. Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual, extra especially Down - one of my favorite bands ever... but he had some less-that-great bands too, like Arson Anthem, which was sort of a punk band where he only played guitar, he didn't sing.
Dunno if you've heard his new band, En Minor... whoa... it's not my favorite thing... at all. It's an odd melange of acoustic instruments that sounds like a bad rendition of a couple of Bear McCreary theme songs from TV shows like Black Sails. His voice is shot to hell. Supposedly he's been clean from the H, but his voice says otherwise.

Stuff by this guy. He has an amazing voice/tone, and is pretty good with the acoustic guitar too:

If anybody happens to listen to this, and likes it, here are some other good (English) ones by him:

Hmmm. Is it just me... or does this guy sound fake? Pretty much everyone these days DOES. But it almost sounds like this dude is using some kind of something that adjusts the pitch of notes or augments and overlaps things with a generated tone. Listen at just after 4:06 when he says "...to think...".

Encountered this on youtube last night, hadn't heard it in ages.
Wonder what the trajectory of the band might have been had Uli not left after this album. I'd imagine subsequent albums with more interesting & complex songs, and a lot less commercial success.
(Selfishly, perhaps, I should have liked to have heard the former.)

Yeah but would you
REALLY WANT
to live in a world without Rock You Like a Hurricane? There would've been a glaring empty space on all the guitar magazines lists of Top 50 Riffs of All Time.

Ola Englund has his new album out now called Starzinger. I posted a video from it a few posts back in this thread. He's one of the only YouTubers I really follow and keep up with. He does all kinds of guitar and metal related videos, and he's also in two bands: Feared, The Haunted. Haven't listened to much of his music, but so far his new album sounds pretty good. It's metal, and it's all instrumental, but it's not all your typical Satan/death/hell kinda metal shit. And even though he's a pretty good guitar player, it's not all up-it's-own-ass with constant virtuoso soloing from start to finish, he takes his time to flesh out interesting verses and rhythm parts.
But he does have one with a guest solo done by guitarist Jeff Loomis from Nevermore and Arch Enemy... which is kinda jaw dropping to see him play it. The sweep picking is flawless. I'm not really interested in sweep picking and all that stuff myself as a player, but it's still cool to see other people do it,... and do it well.
Jeff Loomis solo starts at about 1:50
Footwork of the drummer in the closing part of the song is pretty crazy too.

Anybody... Anybody at all... feel free to answer this:
Name one new ROCK AND ROLL band from 2010 until now that has put out any good rocking songs. NOT a metal band. Those are plentious these days, and coincidentally, that's kinda why I've somewhat lost my love for metal now.
Because I got to thinking... Jane's Addiction, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, they RAWKED. Even some of the grunge and alternative bands later into the 90's at least sounded like rock music. 2000 to 2010 had plenty of rock bands. But I really haven't heard jack shit anymore that was rock and was worth listening to. What the fuck is going on in music? Where's the rock and roll?
