Started looking around at different cover versions of Kansas' Dust in the Wind. I always figured it's probably one of THE most covered songs in the world.

Some phoned in versions. Some that miss the mark and miss the point of the song. But some interesting versions too.

Steve Walsh (the original vocalist for Kansas) was an absolutely incredible singer. On tours he kinda blew his voice out and live recordings don't represent his abilities all that well, but his work in the studio was fucking incredible. Lots of people can hit high notes. King Diamond always sang high as fuck, but it was thin and whiney sounding. Steve Walsh's high notes were huge, massive and powerful, with a real fucking SOUL behind it.

That said.... This guy... Mike Masse, never heard of him before. A live gig from a small bar I guess, and I don't like the sustain of the keyboard violin padding, it's a little muddled sounding with longer trails like that. But this guy hits the notes almost as well as Steve Walsh did on the studio version.

Hadn't even heard the new Tool album until you posted this. Been lost in my world of classic rock. It doesn't help that there aren't ANY fucking radio stations in Atlanta anymore that play stuff like Tool. It's either rap or gospel or shitty pop country or shitty pop rock garbage like... Eh. Sounds predictably more subdued than the previous Tool album. I think when musicians get older (myself included), perhaps they focus less on the aggressiveness that they used to. But it also sounds basically the same as the previous two Tool albums. I know Tool has their own trademark style and sound, and it's largely defined by Adam Jones' particular open string triplet playing "thing" and the drum patterns they often use, but... I dunno, it all sounds like extras/b-sides/whatever that should've been put on an earlier album but didn't make the final cut. So far, nothing in particular on the album jumps out at me as an obvious radio hit like on all the previous albums. It's not horrible, but there's nothing special about it either. It's odd that people call it "progressive metal", because nothing about it has really "progressed" since the last album about 10 years ago. I dunno, maybe after a week or two it'll grow on me more, but I don't think so.

God damn. I would've loved to have seen AC/DC with Bon Scott live back in the late 70's. AC/DC was the most ass-kicking hard rock band on the planet. As a lifelong headbanger, I love Black Sabbath, but as heavy as they were, they never had the wild raw electric energy that AC/DC had back in the Bon Scott days.

This appears to be original live audio from the performance, not some overdubbed studio track. It's clean and clear as hell sounding too. I think it's from the period around the time Powerage came out, a little before Highway to Hell was recorded. I think Angus Young's guitar sounded the best it ever did on that particular album more than the others.
