I wouldn't exactly call GG Allin "shock value for the sake of shock value". It wasn't entirely just a performance. He really was a lawless fucking animal. If you've ever met the type, you'd know what I'm talking about. It ain't necessarily called "crazy", it's just "100% don't care". You don't trade serious words with them because they'll fucking kill you in broad daylight in front of everyone without thinking twice. And if the definition of punk is "don't give a fuck", then no one else is on the same level with GG Allin.

On the other hand, here are bands that are more punk than Ian Mackaye.

most people would say that it sounds way too much like the flaming lips ala the soft bulletin. (although mercury rev came out with that album before the flaming lips came out with the soft bulletin.)

they were both pretty much recorded simultaneously and used the same techniques. i love the soft bulletin more, but im a complete sucker for electronically orchestrated midi chamber pop that sounds like a disney soundtrack.

This didn't come with free samples of Tide in the mail. It doesn't get much airplay anymore either, which is a crying shame, because Robin Trower is the shit. If you never heard of Robin Trower, I'd highly recommend any one of his albums from 1973 on up to 1977, after that I think he got a new vocalist and I didn't like him as much. And also, if you've never heard of Robin Trower, the best way to describe it would be if you took Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd and Bad Company and stuck them all in a mixing bowl, Robin Trower is what you'd pour out. One of the coolest and most totally underrated bands from the 1970's.
