Compression/limiting on individual tracks is one thing, and that kind of targeted use of compression pre-dates the loudness wars by some decades. Completely agreed that kind of compression is useful.

Squashing the master all to hell is something relatively new, a practice which began ramping up in the 90's through the 00's. The supposed purpose of brickwalling the master is to make the track sound louder without having to turn up the stereo (similar to how commercials are often louder than the show.) It's entirely driven by a business motive, at the cost of audio fidelity.

Here's a side-by-side comparison of 1991 CD release of Smells Like Teen Spirit, vs. 2011 "Deluxe" Edition remaster of the same track:

The side-by-side halves are shown in the video preview frame above. The left half is the 1991 original, and the right half is the squashed remaster. Note that the right half as ripped off the CD would actually be completely occupying all of the dynamic range with zero headroom (like the bottom track in this screenshot), making it "louder" than the original. For the purposes of this video, the left and right halves have been normalized based on relative RMS levels, giving them the same effective loudness, so that the differences between the original can be heard (unbiased by the loudness changing between the two.)

To my ear, the remastered version sounds flat, all the life (i.e. dynamics) crushed out of it.

So yeah, the phrase "CLIPPING DEATH - Mastered by Muppets," pretty much sums up the process.

i have red earphones and i always get people asking me 'omg r those beets???'. like they care about the actual earphones more than the music roflmao. its all just how fucking loud the bass sounds with that bullshit. if i wanted that, i would just jack the bass up on my eq all the way, but it sounds like shit. i jack it up a little, but not all the damn way. why do people suddenly care so much about how loud the bass is? nobody cares about the bass player anyway. if i want a loud, resonant, droning sound for 10 minutes, i'd just listen to sunn O)))
