This keeps resurfacing in my mental boom box since I first heard it a few days ago. Not sure how i'll feel next week, but right now i'm quite enjoying it... this... darkly reflective cautionary tale ;)

Q: Led Zeppelin did country music? :WTF:

A: Almost. Sounds a little like some of the country coming out in the early to mid 70's, largely due to the pedal steel slide. I dunno that it's actual pedal steel though. Might just be one of those times when Jimmy Page used his arsenal of effects to make his Les Paul sound kinda like one.

One of my favorite Zeppelin songs, although probably not a very popular one.

Led Zeppelin - Tangerine
<span data-s9e-mediaembed="youtube" style="display:inline-block;width:100%;max-width:640px"><span style="display:block;overflow:hidden;position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%"><iframe allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" style="background:url(https://i.ytimg.com/vi/WCFDo3XSUsQ/hqdefault.jpg) 50% 50% / cover;border:0;height:100%;left:0;position:absolute;width:100%" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/WCFDo3XSUsQ"></iframe></span></span><br /><a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/WCFDo3XSUsQ" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/WCFDo3XSUsQ</a>

And speaking of pedal steel... you think any old idiot can play it? You think country music ain't all that complicated? Nah. Not even close. Wrap your head around what it would take to play country musics most trademark instrument at a proficient studio musician level. Guitar is two hands, maybe one foot to turn switches on and off or control a volume pedal. Big fuckin' deal! This thing is two hands, two feet, and two knees all working to make one sound. And it's a lead instrument that occupies a higher frequency range and is heard over all other instruments in a piece, so when you do it wrong in a performance, it's VERY obvious that you suck at it. :D

I think that's from Fugazi's first album. I never listened to them much personally, but the only stuff they ever did that I even kinda-sorta-barely liked was their first couple of albums. If I recall correctly, they were strictly a DIY band, like they did all their own marketing, managing, everything. And I can appreciate that I guess. It couldn't have been easy. But apparently they had enough of a following and a buzz that people listened to them and they were able to make it work for them like that, which is pretty unheard of. Most bands either CAN'T do it, or just don't want to because it's tedious. They started off sounding kinda punk, but then it just turned into... I dunno what. But not punk. Just college rock, and I really don't get into that stuff. It's just very generic and uninteresting.

it was this counter-culture thing. you could have all these piercings on your body and spike your hair as much as you can but that doesn't make you punk. the point of the movement (and what it means to me), wasn't going against what people expected of you, it was just doing what you wanted to do and fuck anyone who didn't like it.

people think theyre getting away from cliques and social groups by being part of this movement, but really, they're just forming a clique themselves. the whole point of minor threat was mocking the punk image, and not going by any bullshit "rules" set by people who think they're punk, just doing what you want, which is probably the most punk thing you can do. they made being sober and not having sex seem hardcore, rofl.

You see, son, there was this guy called GG Allin. He couldn't sing for shit and it wasn't pretty to listen to. But everything about him was pure fucking anarchy. And he used to piss and shit on stage. Sometimes he'd gnaw on his shit. Sometimes he'd slice himself up and smear his shit in the wounds. Sometimes he'd jump down into the crowd and FUCK people without asking. He once performed half a set in front of an audience while getting his dick sucked by one girl and his balls sucked by another.

And that's why Ian Mackaye is a fucking pussy.

Sorry. But ask anyone who listens to punk, they'll tell you the same. In fact... ask people who DON'T listen to punk. They'll probably know who GG Allin is and won't have a clue who Ian Mackaye is. GG Allin would pick fights with audience members at random. Sometimes he'd kick their ass. Sometimes they'd kick HIS ass. Whereas you'd get kicked out of Fugazi shows for light moshing. Because they were pussies.

Seems somehow reminiscent of an old-school carnival geek.

The first person who aims for base-level shock value wins the distinction of arriving there first. Or if they arrived there by being to some degree mentally ill the outcome is the same: there's a plateau at the basement. At some point nobody wants to follow up a base display by aiming for something more outrageous, because outrageousness in this context becomes its own banality.

So congrats to captain shits-n-fucks for being first. Fader's right: the least punk follow-up would be emulate someone else's direction. "Hi, I'm just like GG Allin, only I also shove hot coals up my ass! Will no-one disrespect my psychological genitalia?"

Fucking boring.

Yeah, it was somewhat of a carnival act. Not to say that he wasn't abso-fucking-lutely batshit crazy, but those performances were usually largely influenced by his drug fueled rages. Off stage, GG Allin wasn't nearly as crazy. But considering the level of "crazy" he reached while performing, saying that he wasn't AS crazy off stage still doesn't mean that he was sane or rational by any stretch. Dude belonged in prison where society could be safe from him. And what's kinda scary is that there's plenty of people with that same attitude roaming the streets freely right now. And this is why the 2nd Amendment is a very very good thing. :D

And people can take whatever direction they want to with music, that's all fine and great. Personally, if GG Allin were still around, I dunno that I'd dare go see him live. If I did, I'd make sure I stayed somewhere in the back where the flying chunks of human shit might be less likely to land. But kicking people out of your shows for moshing and trying to have a good time is just a pussy thing to do, especially for a "punk" band. That's why Fugazi were douchey little pussies and that's why some of the more old-school trashy punkers like myself never really liked them.

Fucking boring indeed.

I agree with quadz; there's nothing really "punk" about shock value for the sake of shock value. Granted. one of my favorite punk bands, the Dead Kennedys, used shock value in their music and image, like naming their songs I Kill Children and Kill The Poor. However, there was at least some sort of cleverness in doing so, because those songs had some funny and thought provoking moments (Kill The Poor is filled with political satire and I Kill Children has lines like 'offer them a helping hand of open telephone wires' :D). They got their message through to people not just by shocking people, but through the music and the message that it contained.

Again, another example is Minor Threat. Minor Threat was just a bunch of scrawny white suburban kids, but they played the harshest and most angry punk music ever made, and in my opinion, they're one of the few bands that's so good because of their message; and because Ian sounds fucking PISSED OFF on those records . ;D Ian MacKaye has said in interviews that he thought he was getting away from all the social shit in school and in regular life, thinking he was above it all by being part of this movement. However, he realized that he was just in another social clique, which was the EXACT thing he was trying to get away from, and that's the problem with the punk movement. People go out of their way to try and fit in with this image of being a punk, and being hardcore, yet they're as far from that as possible. The "punk philosophy" is just about being yourself and doing what you want, and if people don't like it, then they can fuck off. The song Straight Edge was just so good because it mocked that bullshit punk image, although the movement that that song spawned became the same joke that the song itself was mocking. It's a movement that focuses more on the image than the message, which is why people who aren't in the punk movement never take it seriously.

So really, GG Allin was just a guy who was all about the image. Or maybe he was just satirizing modern media through tasteless shock value and he was actually one of the greatest minds in music. :D

(Also, there's a reason why bands kick out people who try to start fights at their shows, it distracts from the actual show and stops people who are actually there to have a good time from having fun themselves. Although, Michael Gira of Swans used to punch people at their shows for headbanging to their music. :P)
