Crue has "broken up" a few times. Vocalist Vince Neil left the band from 1992 to 1997, and during that time they had another vocalist for one album who wasn't worth a shit. Probably their worst selling album. And then various members of the band have had their own side projects. Nikki Sixx had Sixx AM and he found a little bit of success with that band back in 2007 I think. But as for now, they aren't "breaking up" in the sense that they fucking hate each other and don't wanna work together. They're more or less retiring. And I think it's a good move. They may have been technically a "hair metal" band, but they always set themselves apart by being a little edgier and trashier and more bad-assed than the rest of them. But Vince Neil can't sing for shit anymore. I didn't get to see the tour Crue did with Kiss, but I saw their Carnival of Sins DVD, and in it, Neil is always singing with what sounds like some kind of vocal modulation, because there's no vibrato in his voice at all, and it just sounds fuckin WEIRD. All the years of drinking, smoking, and drugging and yelling have probably decimated his voice. Time to hang it up while they still have lots of fans.

One of the saddest things I ever saw was probably back in 02 or 03 when I saw Ratt vocalist Steven Pearcy on tour and he came to the Masquerade in Atlanta. Ratt used to sell out huge fucking arenas back in the mid and late 80's. And there were probably a total of 20 people at this show. It was pathetic.

Regardless of what you think of Smashing Pumpkins, I think they were a unique voice in the 90's and definitely my favorite band in the early 90's. Mistakenly lumped into grunge, that probably actually helped them get noticed at the time.

Corgan can no doubt be a pretentious douche, but I think he's a fairly unique guitarist and songwriter. From what I know, other than Jimmy Chamberlin's actual drumming, Corgan has always played all the instruments on the records.

Saw them live, finally, around 2007 and he went off on crazy long, classic style mixed with Avant-garde guitar solo tangents. To be frank, it left much of the audience a bit confused since they pretty much wanted nothing but radio versions of the hits, but the skill was not in question. Fortunately, Chamberlin was on that tour too though, so I got to witness his awesome skills.

No hits here at all, but I think all this music holds up, plus you can also see Jimmy. I think the current incarnation of SP mixes in a lot more of the hits, and he actually played a bunch when I saw them, but this concert movie was made from a few weeks(?) of dates at the Filmore.

Watch the whole 10 minutes of that song. A few times it seems like his timing is way off, but I think this is a good example of what I was talking about. Also, the drumming is killer too throughout this one.

I absolutely fucking HATED Smashing Pumpkins back in those days. Admittedly, it was a very short-sighted and narrow minded hatred. At the time, it wasn't too long after Nirvana and Pearl Jam came out and hammered the last nail into the coffin of the metal genre, so I was pretty bitter about that. But in the end, that turned out to be a good thing. Hair metal disappeared, thrash continued to develop among a smaller and more hardcore fanbase, and then death metal eventually popped up, which all led into the broad spectrum of metal we have today which is no longer strictly an underground genre. So if anything, grunge and alternative did the metal genre a favor by bastardizing and casting out the bullshit pop "metal" from the airwaves of radio and mtv. And now that I'm older and less bitter about that shit, I can actually appreciate many of those grunge and alternative bands for what they were. And unfortunately, some of them still suck fucking ass as far as I'm concerned. But Smashing Pumpkins wasn't bad at all.

i love the smashing pumpkins, but i always thought they were a slightly less ~~interesting~~ noisy version of my bloody valentine, although they did have their own sound, it borrowed ALOT from that band, especially from the style of shoegaze music in general (which i always thought was weird when people would praise groups like the smashing pumpkins up and down and yet reject music that was "too noisy"; sounds like a bunch of bullshit, dont it?). it took more influence from noise pop bands like the jesus and mary chain than grunge bands like nirvana and soundgarden anyway. i like to call them 'the missing link' between grunge and shoegaze

personally, i like songs like luna more where he actually pulls off the whole shoegaze/dream pop vocals and not sound like he's trying to take a shit, rofl. ive never been a fan of corgan's vocals.

also pretty much everyone ive ever met only know the singles. like seriously, listen to the album.
