Roger Waters - The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking... Not a terrific album. But it's got one or two good songs and some good qualities throughout it. After the huge success of Pink Floyd's The Wall, Waters just went off the fucking deep end with the whole concept album idea. This one was a flaming flop as far as I'm concerned. It's pretty rare that any band does a total package concept album that I actually enjoy and consider to be well made. I'm talkin' a true rock opera with a complete underlying story like The Wall or Mastodon's Leviathan. King Diamond has always done concept albums and has basically made his career doing so, and I kinda like King Diamond and Mercyful Fate, but still, most of the stories are all horror stories basically and that shit just gets kinda boring and uncreative after a while. But as a plus, at least the narrative in the songs on each album (except for the early Fate records) is pretty straightforward and easy to follow, whereas Pink Floyd's The Wall and Mastodon's Leviathan are soaked in lyrical metaphor-heavy poeticism that make the story in the lyrics from song to song a little confusing at times.

Basically... people shouldn't do concept albums anymore. Seems like most people are really bad at it. And being a musician, you gotta know that your fans make your paychecks. And let's face it, most people these days are half-wit twats that don't have the attention spans to sit through an entire album and "get" what kind of art you're trying to make with a concept album where each song tells another chapter of the story. People don't wanna stimulate their imaginations or appreciate art and beauty, they just wanna take their various substances and dance to any industry standard 5 min long song with a droning hypnotic beat like retarded robots.

it depends what you define as a concept album. either something that has a single lyrical theme through all the songs, or tries to tell a linear story, like zen arcade or the downward spiral?

Finally got around to checking out Carcass's latest album. Used to LOVE this band back in the early and mid 90's. They're from UK, but I don't hold it against them. Never understood a single fucking word of their lyrics though. And not because it's death metal either. Even when you read the lyrics in the CD booklet, you still have no fucking idea what he's talking about unless you're a medical student or a surgeon by profession. Where most guys just have a rhyming dictionary or a thesarus when they go to write lyrics for songs, this guy uses fucking medical textbooks and a big fat copy of Grays Anatomy (the book, not the TV show, stupid). Still, as whacked out and insane as the lyrics are, the music is pretty damn cool. The vocalist has a pretty unique voice, and the guitar work they always have is excellent. Very melodic with odd but usually hooky song structuring and abnormal scales that you really don't hear anywhere else, so much so that it probably toes the line reeeeeally close to progressive death metal. It's been about 18 damn years since the last time they put out an album. But thanks to these enormous outdoor death metal festivals like Wacken over in Europe, a lot of these great bands that were the forefathers of death metal have come out of hiding and/or retirement to play again and put out new stuff. I never quite understood why Carcass didn't reform and jump back on the horse before now. Their sound was always pretty close to a lot of the melodic metal stuff that other bands are doing these days, and shit, Carcass was doing it 10-15 years before any of these newer bands showed up. And they kick all their fucking asses at it in my opinion.

Their last album, 1996's Swansong, was pretty... weird. It was a little out of the zone of everything else they had done previously. The drums were a little slower and less all-out aggressive. It just felt like they were slipping into the "rock" category a little bit. But this newest album is a true return to form in my opinion, and sounds a lot more like 1993's Heartwork, which was probably their best album in most people's opinions, me included.
