So when I first heard this song, I really liked what I was hearing, so I got curious about this record and all the stuff I've heard of it, even though I knew that not every song on the album would sound like the one I posted above. Plus, the only exposure I had to this band was when I listened to their debut, Filth, which is probably the single most aggressive thing I've ever heard in my life. It has about 10x as much energy as any hardcore punk record I've listened to, and I love it for that. All the lyrics had this weird over-the-top theme of turning against your friends and using all the hate, sex, and money you can get your hands on for nothing but power for yourself. Of course, this album is a pretty radical departure from that incredibly noisy and no-wavey post-punk stuff they made on an album like Filth.

So I downloaded the whole thing, all 2 fucking hours of it. This freakin' mammoth of a rock album is just a little over 140 minutes, and since I love drone, I love ambient, I love spoken word, I love post-rock, and I love weird left-field experimentation. I listened to every single bit of it, twice. In fact, I listened to the whole thing once all the way through, and I really liked it, but I didn't feel like I really "knew" it that well. So I deleted the ones that I knew were obvious throwaways (if you've ever listened to this album, you KNOW what I'm talking about).

So today, I listened to the whole with all the tracks that I liked (about 17 songs), and I've come to the conclusion that this, as a whole, is the absolutely WEIRDEST and above all else, most inconsistent album that I've EVER heard. Seriously, you have those just really larger-than-life 10 minute epics like the songs Helpless Child and The Sound (which get a lot of praise by themselves), and those tracks are absolutely amazing. In fact, I'd be totally comfortable calling them masterpieces. But there's also elements of ambient, drone, spoken word, hard rock, musique concrete, minimalism, gothic rock, punk, harsh noise, showtunes, and even DANCE MUSIC. (I bet you could get away with playing that song at clubs, lmfao.) This album is just all over the place. It just comes off as being really dark, disturbing, and most of all, mysterious. Anyone else's interpretation of what this album is trying to accomplish is as good as mine.

The lyrics are just another story as well. When the lead man of this band, Michael Gira sings, he sings in this really DEEP inflection, and spits these weird abstract lyrics that almost sounds like he's just singing poetry. That dance track above has this random woman singing about this girl trying to become famous and be a star. The most interesting part of this whole album, in my opinion, is the spoken word bits. When Gira isn't singing, there are these WEIRD as hell vocal samples just sprinkled all across the album. The track "How They Suffer" has an interview with Gira's father about how he developed blindness. "I Was a Prisoner In Your Skull" has this man talking about how fucked up that "you" are as a person with this really uneasy sounding ambient noise playing over the whole thing. The track "The Beautiful Days" has this woman with a very distinct voice talking about having phone sex with this man while he groans and masturbates, with all these weird droney ambient noises that almost sound like field recordings playing in the background. The whole track is pretty fucking disturbing. The very same track has this.... really disturbing little girl's voice sampled all across the track. It's probably the strangest and most disturbing on the entire album. The same woman in "The Beautiful Days" talks in the track "Minus Something" how she feels faded as a person and how there's something missing in her life, and she hopes that it'll come back.

Honestly, all the instrumentation and ambient drones on this thing, especially what plays over the spoken word parts are really amazing. When I played this whole thing the second time around, the last track that I got to was "The Final Sacrifice", and at the end, there's an applause followed by Gira thanking the audience, which I thought was a nice touch.

This thing is NOT for everyone. If you're impatient, or you'd rather listen to like, a pop song or something, then don't even bother with this, rofl. If you cant handle ~~some~~ ~~a little~~ A LOT of experimentation, then don't bother with it either. If you like that sort of thing (or just like Godspeed You! Black Emperor), then at least give it a chance, and let it grow on you. You won't regret it.

(also, first time listening to this, and wow, i was expecting a masterpiece, and the whole thing just kind of underwhelmed me, although hard rock as a whole bores the shit out of me honestly rofl. plus, if i had a penny for every time i heard any fucking song from this thing on a radio station, i'd be buying more than just a stairway to heaven.)
