Nah, it's probably real. But in his defense, the exact wording of that verse varies depending on what version of the Holy Bible your denomination chooses to use.

Or beam. I'm sure you can understand how this might totally confuse some of the simplest minds in the world who believe that it was possible to turn water into wine or make blind people see without a surgical procedure.

I gotta think it's pretty bad to actually believe any of that crap might've happened... but then I see programs on the History channel where they try to give scientific explanations to things like Moses parting the Red Sea or the plauges of locusts and darkness on Egypt. It takes several well-educated professors with lofty degrees to come up with hypotheses on how a strong wind and a sand bar might've explained the parting of the Red Sea. Those same people spend their time thinking and proposing that maybe the plague of locusts and darkness was actually a distant volcanic eruption which drove the masses of locusts into the area temporarily, after which the ash from the eruption blocked out the sunlight... These people waste their talents trying to prove things that are nothing but made up fairy tales anyway. But hey, as long as the History channel pays them for the show, I guess it's worth the time. $:-\$

Well well, what a long catch up that was, and such a diverse content. I have recently read alot on this subject, this thread not withstanding, and have found that God actually likes it when we question him. Yes I said it, he likes it. Why you say? Because if you are questioning him you are in some sort of relationship with him. He likes to hear your complaints and arguments. This is something I have found in the Bible many times. Even his chosen few that he actually talked to questioned him at times. Moses for example questioned God on why the heck are You not guiding us to the promised land, and God acquiesced and said I will guide you . Even Jesus complained to God as he was being crucified. David bitched about anything and everything.
My point being so many people think there is a "blind faith" you must have to have a relationship with God. You don't, I talk to him throughout the day and sometimes I'm like "wtf is this about?". Not in those words per say but I do relay my doubts and complaints now that I know he still hears me. How do I know he hears me? Well therein lies the crossroad of religion and science, science says I might be crazy and religion says I have faith. Thing is I am interested in science just as much as I am in knowing the "true" God.

Those laws were the old laws of the old testament, and do not apply now. The stoning part that is...after Jesus came all the old laws changed. Just because the Jews tend to stick to some of the old laws doesn't mean we should all be idiots.

One of the key sources for skepticism on this point, of course, is that the world appears to function precisely as one would expect it to function if we primates were merely "talking" to our own imaginations, and nobody was really listening:

Natural disasters affect the cruel and kind, the faithful and the faithless in identical proportions. Churches routinely collapse on believers who have congregated there for shelter and prayer during earthquakes just like any other building. etc. etc. etc.

In short: there appears to be no external effect that would differentiate between such 'talking' really just occurring in your own imagination, vs. talking to a universe that is 'listening'.

Except for the part where Jesus explicitly stated otherwise: "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." -- Matthew 5:17-18

Eschatologists and apologists of course jump through crazy hoops trying to parse this into some form that matches their current belief set.

(Just as they try to do with the other multitude of Biblical contradictions.)

And yet you can count the number of preachers and pastors who refuse to cite verses from the Old Testament as authoritative during their sermons on probably zero fingers.

When they stop trying to have it both ways, and start preaching from Bibles where the Old Testament has been relegated to an appendix clearly marked with a large type disclaimer stating: "NOT TO BE TAKEN LITERALLY. JESUS CHANGED ALL OF THIS." then maybe your argument would have some force. In the meantime we both know it doesn't get preached that way.

Again, this sort of philosophical dodge bot manoeuvre does nothing to change the fact that the universe appears to behave precisely as one would expect it to behave if no supernatural entity were listening.

Further, historically we can trace the occurence of natural disasters back in the fossil record long before homo sapiens existed. Which animal species do you suggest were "followers of evil" back before humans existed?
