With 128 megs of ram, the ONLY alternative to get that lappy running decently would be windows 98

98 runs q2 wonderfully. Beyond that, I would not consider any upgrades to your laptop unless you find some cheap ram as you will always be neutered with that on board video.

I have a Thinkpad t41 with 512 megs of ram and XP Pro is as slow as molasses with it. I might install Win2k.

As a matter of fact, I don't even know how you can even game with a laptop, you got balls for even trying!!

Look around for a cheap used computer. You would be surprised what you could find for $100

So your saying that a system with 512MB of Memory can't run XP Pro? Wow, you really don't know what you're talking about...

Well guys, i took the best option and bought a new computer today. Its a celeron, but like i said price is definitely an issue. this ran me just over 500 dollars.

The weak point is obviously the video department, but then again, quake 2 is the only game i will be playing. I do however plan to upgrade that at some point, as well as the ram (2-3GB). Does anyone know of a decent video card that would be compatible with this motherboard? I am looking for one that has 128mb DDR (either ATI or nvidia) which i believe would run q2 at lightning speed. I dont know much about video cards though. In addition, there is no OS currently on this computer. I am leaning towards xp home/pro. I do not know a great deal about operating systems or video cards, so ANY ADVICE would be appreciated.

Well it looks like that mobo has 1 PCI Express x16 slot. So that's the type of card you're going to want.

Guessing you want a 128MB card for price reasons? Well it turns out you're really not going to save all that much with a 128MB PCI Express Card vs a 256MB PCI Express Card. The prices are pretty much the same and 128MB cards are pretty rare to find in PCI Express x16 format.

I'm a huge fan of NVIDIA through my experiences with their cards in the past and present. As for a manufacture of NVIDA cards I suggest EVGA. I've purchased through many different manufactures of NVIDIA cards in the past but I find these guys have been the best for me so far.

There's more to look at when picking out a card besides the total amount of memory, such as Core Clock and Memory Clock speeds. Like always... the higher the more expensive. But I'm guessing you're looking for something strictly based on low price. You didn't post how much you were willing to spend so I'll use $100 as the limit.

Those cards are all 7600 series which wasn't a bad series. When I first built my (old) computer I started out with this series. Honestly I would suggest getting one of the higher price cards though. When getting a video card it isn't worth being to cheap about it. (I lost more money this way because I would constantly buy a card and replace it months later due to performance issues, now I just buy the $500 cards haha) You will be much more happy with it's performance, especially if you happen to play a game other then Quake 2.

Oh and get WinXP Pro 32bit (home sucks). Don't bother with Vista yet and a 64bit OS. The only real point to getting a 64bit OS is so you can exceed the memory limit of 3.5GB of a 32bit OS. If you don't plan on doing that (your mobo supports 4GB of ram btw) then there is no point in going through the 64bit driver hassles.

thanks a million.. yeah, i dont know much about vid cards.. but i'll get the pci-express 256mb definitely since its similarly priced.. i was always told that DDR memory was best for vid cards (already knew it was the only way to go for ram). so i wasnt sure.. i'll check and see if this mobo is compatible with ddr. and i actually have xp pro on this laptop i have now.. i dont have the disk for it though, i have the serial#, and i'm currently working on getting UNC to give me another disk since i lost mine.. we'll see

Yeah those cards are GDDR3 and GDDR2. That is just the type of ram on the video card. I believe it isn't an issue of whether or not your motherboard can support it or not. You should be all set.
