yeah i know that, and i had noticed that as soon as I shoot ssg it would freeze. haunted was telling me to do cl_particles 0 from the start and i thought that it has to be less simple than that. i'll have to play around with the commands for a while and see if i can get it working right.

7900GS is a downgraes 7900gt
Well we should all know that already...
I'm just saying, reviews from customers on purchase sites and the Nvidia forums listed many problems. Some had no problems, like me. I had a 7900gt and never had an issue, so I don't know.
I have two 7600gt's laying around doing nothing if you honestly wanted one.

I replace 3d cards like bad habits (wicked waste of money). I have 3 pci express x16 cards in their boxes doing nothing. let me do inventory and see what I officially got.

Dervish, i am aware of those settings. i have mine set incredibly small.. something might be a little messed up in there.. i'll take what you've said into consideration while i experiment with it. thanks for the help.
EDIT: Jager i'm serious. i'll give you the S&H and then some. pm me if you want

if i could find out a way to just have the rail particles on... pretty annoying to hear a rail barely miss you and not know where it came from in tdm. any ideas?
EDIT: the freeze ONLY HAPPENS WHEN A BULLET OR SHOTGUN SHELL HITS A WALL. at dm1 i fired ssg into the sky repeatedly, no crash.. one time at the wall, crash. can't ctrl alt del, nothing. always have to cut the comp off and back on (after a few mins
)

well particles no.. railtrail yes.
try "cl_railtrail 3" in your config.
It will give you the laserbeam style railtrails that are optional in r1q2.
change the number to change the color.
It's kinda wierd looking, and it fades too fast for locating an enemy by it, but it's better than not seeing anything at all!

im no expert, but i believe it really depends on which games you will be playing. haunted runs q3 arena easily with onboard bullshit video. q4 is a large step above.. i was leaning toward the 7900gs only because i plan to keep my new comp for quite a while and wanted to be prepared to future games i might like. the 7900gs is also an excellent overclocker. i would not touch the 7600gs, i'm not familiar with that one at all. i know that newegg has the 7600gt for under 100 dollars, which is a hell of a deal. i believe that both memory and clockspeed are almost equally imortant. however, i feel that having at least 256mb would be smart. Also the type of memory i'm sure will mean a lot. GDDR3 would be great. and if you can get a good vid card for 100 dollar range, its no big loss if you need to upgrade later.

Metal if you are currently playing other games as well as quake2, or plan to, go for the 7900GS. It has 20 pixel shader pipelines on a 256 bit memory bus, compared to 12 and 128 bit memory bus for the 7600 series. That = 2x the speed and eye candy. If you are only planing on Playing q2, hell even the 7600 is overkill.
I have a 7900GS KO and it plays BF2, Farcry and F.E.A.R great.

If you want a card that will last a while, get a 7900GS or better
. Expect to spend at least $150 on a card. I would prefer getting a card that will last for a few years unquestionably, rather than getting a card where after a year it can barely run any new games.
Here's a good deal since on a 7900gs there's a $40 rebate:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150183
Here's a good deal again for a 7950gt, only $160 after rebate:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143090
I recommend this one.
The one con about getting one of these cards is they won't support directx 10, but the only cards that are able to are overpriced (except for 8600gt, which just isn't as powerful as the 7900s anyway
)

Why I keep suggesting 7600GT over 7900's is that the 7900's sucked, there were to many problems. However the 7950's are good. If you really want a 7900, get a 7950.
(I also don't suggest bfg or xfx for a manufacture. I had a bad experience with a XFX card. EVGA has never done me wrong.)
7950's seem rare now for some reason... guess this is the only 7900 I will suggest. Good reviews, decent price. Same specs as any 7900gs out there.
