My computer has got to be on its last leg... its slower now than it was a year ago, which is bad. I'm honestly thinking hard about formatting and starting over with windows 98 instead of xp pro.. i really think it would run a hell of a lot faster, and i dont use any software to my knowledge that requires xp. Specs on this shitty ass laptop are:

p3 1133mhz
128 ram <---

C: 12GB (5.9 GB free)
D: 16 GB (14.3 GB free)

I wanted to get some opinions on this, because i really think this should be fine, but i've never went back to an old OS before. would i be making a mistake or am i good to go?

i suggest getting a new comp, thats probably the best thing

if not my suggestion is to reformat again with xp and start from scratch
win98 will probably be more slower than xp. also upgrade your ram if you can

it might work "better" with Windows 98, you need some more RAM !!

XP requires 64 megs of RAM, meaning of _nothing_ is installed, it shoudn't blue screen, and will take forever, but will work with 64 megs. if I were you and I wasn't buying more RAM, I would install 98

I second getting a new computer, LOL.

Also I say stick with XP, it's better than 98 in many ways. And if you went back to 98, you'd be stuck using FAT32 file system. You wouldn't be able to work with files bigger than 4GB's. Though with the capacity of those hard drives, I don't think you would be anyway.

Of course you could always just play around with using Linux on it, I believe DSL would run just fine on that hardware.

in all honesty i second getting a new computer as well, the problem is, i dont have much of a budget since i'm taking classes for pharmacy school while working. x'tyfe, i'm on my second harddrive and have had this thing "re-imaged" (thats what they call it at UNC) 7 times, meaning they started from scratch with xp, which really didnt do much. sorry, i should have included that bit of info. I know ram is my weak point, hence the crazy eyes.. i once bought ram off ebay that was guaranteed to fit my system, an IBM thinkpad R31, and it didnt. after that i just said fuck it. regardless of q2, im just trying to milk this bitch for all its worth. I'm guessing in my case this may be a good move...?

EDIT: Part of the reason i choose win98 is that i'm very familiar with that OS. I also do not touch files larger than 300mb, let alone 4 GB. and also, just for shits and giggles, the last time i connected to tourney4 my fps after a timerefresh was 11.

You can get a computer for about $300 that will own yours now. That really isn't to expensive.

Oh and Win98 will be slower then XP...

windows 98 was always fast for me, and booted up quicker than XP. If you have such low memory why wouldn't it be quicker, with not much less memory, you can't even run XP.

thanks for the advice.. i'll probably just end up getting a new comp sometime early next year. the concept of xp being faster than 98 is news to me.. still dont quite understand, but oh well

it's the way the xp handles the use of memory compared to 98 that makes it more stable and quicker.

I think you would be better off with windows 2000 than 98, esp if you have a newer graphics card
