well first of all, thanks a lot dervish. 2nd i am getting a steady 125 fps on my settings, and this is gl_texturemode "LINEAR_MIPMAP _LINEAR", the highest setting. I plan to get the 7600gt, which will run q2 like lance armstrong on a tricycle. I think they're COULD.. COULD be a compatibility issue here, but chances are i can get my settings to work it out.. i'll take everything you guys have said into consideration, thank you

metal, if you're going to buy a higher-end video card, perhaps go with a geforce 8600GT. Here in Canada, an eVGA geforce 7600GT is the same price ($135) as an eVGA geforce 8600GT. The Geforce 8 series is supported by DirectX 10, whereas there's no support for the 7 series.

Hmm...

Well I haven't read much on the 8600GT cards. However comparing reviews I would still lean towards a 7600GT. The stats are pretty much the same except if you honestly need to run DirectX 10. The price is not the same, the 7600 is about $20 cheaper.

I run on xp pro x64 with no problems at all.

I assume that you have fairly recent vid drivers since you just built this rig, and you reinstalled them recently.
Just in case, you might want to google up the onboard card to see if you can find even newer drivers.

but do you also have the latest build of r1q2 and r1gl?
(you can run the r1q2 updater to find out)
probably wont help, but if you need to post an error dump over on r1ch's forums, you'll need the latest builds.

I think it must have something to do with the opengl and that's usually a driver problem of some sort, or hardware incompatibility.

The "couldn't register windows class" error that you had before kinda supports this hypothesis too..
I had an old ATI rage card that was technically capable of running q2 (specs-wise) but would constantly give that same error message, or run q2 for a bit but then bog down and crash..

Once you get the geforce card in there it should be fine, as they tend to work very well with quake games..

i have the most recent r1q2 and r1gl.. but i use gl just because i like the color better, guess i could switch back, but both of them crash the same way currently. i'll check out vid drivers and such.. and i might check the 8600gt out too

They do, but I have used Radeons and Geforces and they all have given me problems with running older GL games. But maybe you're right.

As far as I know quake2 loads every driver that is located in the root folder (Hi Granny) so maybe the problem has to do with having both the old and newer gl driver loaded. You could try the following: remove the old ref_gl.dll, then duplicate the ref_r1gl.dll and rename that duplicate to ref_gl.dll
According to r1ch this should not be a problem but it seemed to have solved the crashes for me, at least that's what I think.

whats the difference? one is just overclocked and it costs that much extra? i'm just not familiar with this kinda stuff. would this card run quake 4?

Also, i have 2 slots for ram. one is filled with Kingston 1GB PC2 - 5300 CL5 240 KVR667D2N5/1G. so i have one extra slot. would it be best to sell this 1GB stick on ebay and get 2 2GB sticks of the best shit my comp can handle (i will most likely do this.. eventually)?

Cool. I still don't suggest the 7900 series but it's your call. If you do lean towards the 7900 I'd get a 7950. 7900s just had way to many problems for me to suggest them.

As for memory, make sure your board can handle 4 GB of memory before you go and purchase two sticks of 2GB. If you want to upgrade your memory now then only get one stick of 1GB that matches the stick in there already. You are always going to want matching pairs of memory otherwise your dual-channel will not function.

7900GS is a downgraes 7900gt, but it will be fine for every game currently out there. It may even run UT3 or other demanding games down the road just fine.

hmm wierd.

Maybe the other settings you have for particles are messed up.. there's a couple that set the size of them and such, but I never screw with them.. the change you made there should effectively turn off all the particle effects, in case you were wondering.
