I was gonna recommend that. I got that error out of r1q2 any time I tried opengl, before I figured out how to fix it.

so i've installed the sound drivers (integrated "HD" audio lol), rebooted, tried the computer speakers and my headphones in every headphone jack, nothing.. i just hear a humming sound

so in device manager there is no yellow bangs? 

is it muted?

try strictly using the back of the computer to plug into. make sure you are plugging in a headphones connector in the sound jack (green normally?) and not the mic jack. ;p

HA! got it. there were no yellow bangs in the sound department, but i saw one under "system interrupt controller" not sure what that means.  i have 2 sound outputs green and yellow, the yellow one works i know.  i was in the green one before.. there is also the red microphone hookup as well.. hopefully this is it

q2 runs fine at decent settings (for me) at a steady 125 fps.  however, within a few minutes everything just freezes.  on haunted's screen it looked as if i was lagged and eventually timed out and disconnected, so it says.. but i was still locked up. i couldnt f10, esc, or ctrl alt del my way out. had to power down.. no idea what this is.. and there will also be a sound in the background, like someone is shooting a fully automatic laser (hyperblaster-ish? lol)

EDIT: this windows xp is 64-bit.

Maybe try regular Windows XP instead of the Windows XP 64-bit.  I've heard of horror stories regarding the 64-bit OS.

could be the integrated sound card taking a shit... that's an odd crash though.

I've gotten the repeating sound upon lockup before, but never had the crash totally stop me from using ctrl+alt+del or alt-tab.
(this was due to a wierd problem I was having with certain maps and OSP's gladiator bots so I doubt it's applicable)

Has nothing to do with 64bit. 64bit is pretty much going to be the standard and the only horror stories that really exist came from when the OS was first released (as always). But now pretty much every major  company has caught up and has released working 64bit drivers.

I run 64bit Windows now and I've ran it since the release of it. I never had a single problem with any of the programs I used before 64bit, including Quake 2.

This happens every time about a minute into play and seems impossible to recover from once it has crashed.  i'm using r1q2 currently and plain old "gl" mode.

like i said some of the lines are worthless or probably arent even for q2 haha, i've done a shit load of copy/pasting over the years and have never kept track of dumb commands and repeat lines

well you've got some redundant sound control values and a few odd values here and there.
and some of them are either conflicting or incorrect..

I'd take out the "set s_khz" ones that are set to "11" khz as I think q2 can only handle 22 and 44..
Keep all these ones and delete any of their duplicate values from your config:

also, you might want to use ref_r1gl.dll instead of the standard ref_gl.dll as well...
so change this:

to this:

strangely, none of these should be causing q2 to crash..

The annoying thing is that each time after a hardware/system upgrade I'm always getting serious Q2 crashes, similar to what you describe. When I somehow get the game up and running again I usually can't even remember what I did to solve the problem:/
The last time I upgraded to a new vidcard the game began to freeze, hang, crash and whatnot. Most of the times it was related to newer GL drivers having trouble(?) with older GL games like Q2. It's not unlikely that by using the same config file after a hardware upgrade an obsolete renderer for Q2 is loaded by default.
You can always just delete the config.cfg from the baseq2 dir and then start the game; it will start in software mode and automatically create a new default cfg. (Problem is you'll have to reset the controls and other stuff.) Once in the game, go to video settings and choose "r1gl".

It would probably also be wise to take a look at the system logs:
Start -> run...
then type: eventvwr.msc
(Or rightclick "my computer" and select "manage". Go to "system tools" -> event viewer.)

Look for any errors (red signs) in the 'application' and 'system' logs, there probably is an error with the date of the latest crash in there. Oh and when doing a web search include the Event-ID#.

i played in opengl with 600mz celeron 128mb sdram and a 5mb onboard piece of shit in 800x600 years ago

the onboard cards are way better now then they were back then
