Well, QD, preaching the literal texts would leave you susceptible to being forced into hours of untangling contradictions that other poeple made by their own interpretations, and I can understand why you wouldn't want to do that.

Like how stoning people and "putting them to death" do not constitute murder..
Or why we spank kids instead of killing them when they start a fist fight with their father, like God has commanded.

Exodus 21:15 (NIV)
"Anyone who attacks his father or his mother must be put to death."

I wouldn't want to be in the position to explain away those things, ad nauseum.
Sticking with the concepts definitely seems like the smartest way.

Sorry to be picky quadz, although this isn't really part of the debate here, i just couldn't help but say..The universal acceptance of Arabic numerals was not until the 9th century, however regionally the Arabian Peninsula had used them for quite some time. This can be seen in Saracen-Christian translations of the bible in the time period you're referring to. Most of the numbers we use today had been already 'invented' around 400-500 years before Jesus was around. Ways and cultures(including arabic numerals) of the Arabian Peninsula weren't even introduced to europe/asia minor until a Saracen empire began to emerge and expand.

I did read the Wikipedia article on Arabic Numerals before posting. (And the Brahmi numerals it said they derived from.)

After further reading, it's still not clear to me that the kind of numerals I'm trying to refer to, existed back then. Maybe I'm using the wrong term for them? I'm talking about a decimal numeral system (including zero) that facilitates long multiplication and long division. (Even long addition and subtraction, for that matter.) Maybe I should have said "modern arabic numerals" ?

Certainly other numeral systems in use in Jesus' time (Babylonian, Greek, Roman, Abjad, ...) were total hell for the sort of arithmatic problems we give these days to grade school students.

I still suspect a number like 490 would have been unwieldy indeed to anyone Jesus might have been preaching to. I doubt many such folks would have had any idea how to write a number like that down.

I don't suppose we have any more raw talent, or raw intelligence than we did at that age, ... but I'd hope we've learned a few things since then.

because "experience" seems more applicable, in most cases...

I definitely don't feel any more "wise" with the passing of years, unless you count being more of a wise-ass.

Oh, yeah i agree w/ the statement regarding the 490 years thing. Although I did look at the wikipedia article, I made that comment just off history classes I think. I remember a topic specifically being that civilization on the A.P. was using 0-9 around 500 years before you're thinking. I just took a random guess that a saracen-christian translation of something around this time period would show this. Basically I was just being picky about using 'invented' instead of 'known/accepted'. I could be wrong though.

A & E will be showing the documentary "Jesus Camp" this coming Sunday/Monday. I haven't seen it, but the previews looked interesting. And these kids are so young....

*edit* I went to IMDB and read reviews. Yep, looks like this movie is gonna piss me off hardcore. Got a chuckle from one reviewer: "The best part was when the kids gathered around a card board cut out of George W. Bush, asking God to give him wisdom. If only...."
