I read this at lunch and damn near choked on my pasta.

It really made me wonder why someone so profoundly incurious would want to be on the science committee.
I had to assume that he's just there to throw a wrench in the gears any time someone proposes something that the GOP(cough religious right cough) can't accept, just like they do in big business when one group of peer reviewed scientists for the EPA states that they will be hurting the environment in X or Y way, only to have a paid group of (consultant) scientists bring forward a study that directly contradicts the other's findings.

We should really have an entrance exam on that kind of committee. On this one, they should at least be expected to outline the basic steps of the scientific method, or show competence in their understanding of current technologies or astronomy.

This is the kind of issue I see occurring in states where they are proposing that creationism be taught as an equally viable theory to evolution in biology/life science classrooms. The problem is not in the propositions, it's in the basic inability of the group proposing it to even understand the views of their opposition and how they arrived at them and how that method can be compared to the method used by their own group.

Group B (for believers) know that group A opposed them and they must be wrong for doing so, so they manufacture reasons that group A is wrong instead of being willing to change their understanding of reality based on changing conditions or knew knowledge in the world around them. Their rigid belief systems don't mix with the new, so they assuem the new is just a new belief system that they can deny.

It goes hand in hand with people making stupid comments about how people who expect evidence and proof are "believers in science" when science requires no belief. They want to compare science and their own religions/beliefs as if they are both apples, when in reality one is an apple and the other isn't even a piece of fruit.
