I was browsing through the free Video On Demand shit I get with my Dish Network. Came across this one movie where the description sounded so outlandish that I figured it'd be worth a watch.

The entire movie is in spanish with english subtitles. So the basic idea is that a zombie apocolypse has hit the island of Cuba. To take advantage of the situation, Juan and his best friend start a zombie killing business.

Usually I'd find it kinda hard to laugh at a movie where I have to read everything in subtitles. But god damn if this wasn't funny as hell in spite of that. It's not constantly start-to-finish hilarious. It's kind of a black comedy, and those movies never work like that anyway. But when it IS funny, it'll make you shit your pants laughing.

Seriously, if you have the opportunity to watch this, do so. If you have Dish, it should probably be available on demand at least until september.

Been a long time since the last time I saw this one.

I thought that Venom was pretty good. I also enjoyed Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I know, I'm behind on the times. Christopher Robin was cute and I enjoyed it.

Coen brothers movie. Watched it a couple nights ago (it's a collection of 6 short stories threaded by a common theme). I'm still processing it. Definitely worthwhile if you're familiar with (and enjoy) their oeuvre. (Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Fargo, Burn After Reading, No Country for Old Men; etc.)

They Shall Not Grow Old

Saw this last night. Looks like they did quite a bit of frame by frame digital editing to colorize things. There's some weird things going on with faces in some scenes, makes me think perhaps in spots they layered modern live action images and then layered the faces on that.

It's not a complete accounting of the major events that caused and swayed WW1, but it's a very accurate accounting of what life was like for any random British soldier in the trenches. Some of the shit that happened in WW2 was positively horrible, particularly for anyone in the Battle of the Bulge or the seige on Stalingrad. But I think WW1 might've been worse simply because the main battle front stayed stagnant for about 3 or 4 years. I dunno if all the overdubbed narrative is original audio recordings of people who served in WW1, but all of them have heavy british accents, and I couldn't quite understand parts of it... but at one point it sounded like one of them was describing people getting sucked into mud puddles and actually DROWNING beneath the mud around the trenches. I can't imagine how any of them got out of it alive and then went back to normal life without being totally fucking insane from the experience.

Not a kids movie at all. Probably not a good date movie, although I would urge ANYONE 14 and up to watch it just for the educational value, especially younger teens who might think of joining the military. WW1 is kinda the forgotten war that often gets buried under the Hollywood celebrity bullshit that makes WW2 history so attractive to "edu-tainment" consumers.

John Wick Chapter 3 - Parabellum

The story kinda sucks. In the first two it doesn't feel so hokey, but in this 3rd one, the whole premise of the "organization" behind the movies plot is just ridiculous. But the action is pretty fucking insane-o. Particularly the knife fight in the gun and weapons store scene towards the beginning of the movie. That was probably THE craziest fucking hand-to-hand action sequence I've ever seen in my life. INCREDIBLE!

Lords of Chaos

It's about the whole mid-90's black metal church burning thing in Norway and how Varg Vikernes killed Mayhem guitarist Euronymous. It's kinda shitty how they Hollywood-ize that whole situation. The movie makes them all look like a bunch of fucking idiots, and they were... but it also kinda glamorizes them in a way. And the movie favors the narrative that Euronymous never actually intended to kill Varg... and maybe that's true... but he DID say he wanted to drag him to the woods and make a snuff film. Them's serious words, and you can't entirely blame someone if they choose to take that threat seriously. On the other hand, evidence shows he just showed up and started knifing the shit out of him and he never really fought back, which I think says something too, like maybe the film got that part right.

Varg has since been released from prison and he's a free man now. Occasionally I'll watch his YouTube videos where he discusses different things. And sometimes I find myself agreeing with him about certain things and thinking, "Hmm, this guys pretty cool." But then I remember what he did to his FRIEND. And I also remember that he's a fucking hardcore NAZI who seems to intentionally not mention that aspect about himself in order to appear more rational and reasonable. It's "interesting" how certain people can be like that.

edit: Hmmm. Was not aware of it until just now when out of curiosity I went googling, but apparently YouTube has banned Varg from their platform because they don't want to promote "hate speech". If he had any videos promoting hate speech, that would be fine. But MOST of his videos did NOT, and in the interest of GOD DAMNED AMERICAN FREE SPEECH... I personally think they should've been left the hell alone. Free speech gets eroded a millimeter at a time. This only gets worse.

To be fair, the First Amendment only applies to actions taken by the government. Private companies are allowed to put whatever the hell they want in their TOS and ban people from their platforms for anything. (Also, it doesn't apply to non-Americans.)

An older movie I DVR'd the other day. Seen parts of it here and there before, but tonight was the first time I ever sat and watched it start to finish.

What Lies Beneath - starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford, came out in 2000. I'd give it about a 8 or 9 out of 10. Really good. Wiki calls it a "supernatural horror" film, and I guess that's somewhat accurate, although I'm more inclined to put it in the "thriller/suspense/horror" category, since it does utilize a hefty amount of suspense. Great Halloween season kinda movie. The story kinda reminds me a lot of the old Tales From The Crypt HBO miniseries from the early 90's.

3 From Hell

Was browsing through the movies for rent on the XboxOne Movies & TV app thingy last night and came across one called "3 From Hell". I was completely unaware that Rob Zombie was making a sequel to The Devil's Rejects (which was the sequel to House of 1000 Corpses). And personally, I enjoyed The Devil's Rejects a lot more than House of 1000 Corpses. But Sid Haig who played the deranged killer clown Captain Spaulding passed away last month (Sept 21st, 2019), and I guess he must've been in declining health prior to his death anyway, because the movie had very little of him in it. The story kills him off right at the beginning, and he really only appears in one scene. Honestly HE WAS the franchise in my opinion, and without him, you might as well not make a movie with those characters.

In case anyone wants to see it, I won't talk much at all about the story or anything else. But... boy, what a let down. Honestly, from an artistic standpoint, Rob Zombie should've left it the way it ended in Devil's Rejects. That was the perfect ending, going out in a hail of bullets to Skynyrd's Freebird. This one though... It was not very good. It felt cheesy and stupid. It gave you the distinct impression that it was a whored-out rehash for the sake of making money. This movie should NOT have been made. Disappointing as hell.

Remember that South Park episode where the guys have nightmares of Steven Speilberg and George Lucas raping the Star Wars characters in a Deliverance parody? It was kinda like that.

I ducked back down to my wife and said they're almost done, lol. The doc said it's the best c section she's done or seen in awhile, and perhaps that's true because my wife didn't retain fluid or swell post-OP. At least she likes her job, a lot of the doctors and nurses in hospitals hate their lives and act miserable all the time. Which I don't blame them and sympathize with the crap they deal with but I'm talking about the truly exceptional ones considering that. Anyway it went well so far knock on wood.

Congrats!!

I imagine in California, here, one would be more likely to hear hushed vocalizations amid the sounds of machines beeping. CCR and Skynyrd seems like a nice touch.

It was professional otherwise. They asked her what music she wanted on to calm her (it was an emergency procedure), she said CCR, and when Pandora switched to Skynyrd the doc really got into it. Thanks for the congrats, there will be no trilogy.

But yeah I doubt you'd get that experience in California haha. At least UNC and Duke have the best medical care in the South, and fortunately many that come from there choose to practice on the coast with Wilmington being the most ideal spot.
