I sat out of the last one. Looks like I'm out of Quake2 altogether... (everyone says, "Looks like I'm out of Quake2.") ...until I can get this rootkit/malware/whatever eradicated. Whatever the hell it is won't let anticheat load, makes me pause every one second, and just makes playing totally annoying. Whatever this is living on my system seems to be getting worse and worse every day. Takes longer and longer to startup, takes longer to open a browser, sometimes locks up the browser mid-browsing, etc etc. AVG and MalwareBytes won't kill it. Looks like I'll have to try to backup anything important, nuke the drive (reformat), and start fresh. Life sucks.
you might want to try using msconfig to clean up your start up list, and run rootkit revealer to see what's what before you wipe the whole thing. If you find a bunch of stuff that it tells you is hidden from the windows API, you can boot in safe mode or from the recovery console and manually delete that stuff out and you may be able to save the setup. If that doesn't find anything or make a dent in the virii, then its definitely time to reformat/install.
honestly these days its just easier to wipe a system and start over :/ as long as you can replace all your files or have them backed up its probably even faster lol
Definitely easier to reformat and whip than platter clean!Anyway, I llok forward to the next round of 500. I'll just need to keep my eye out for the Vigi guy. LOL
Whatever this shit is, it's hiding itself VERY well. Rootkit Revealer doesn't really show anything I can truly identify as the culprit. I've run numerous anti-rootkit and anti-virus programs and none of them can get rid of it. AVG finds a hidden .SYS driver with some random name, it supposedly removes it, then to finish the process you have to reboot the system. After rebooting, it seems as though the same hidden "unknown" driver comes back with a completely different name. Even if it were to completely kill that file off, I'm sure there are other bad files tucked away here and there that I'll never be able to find and delete all at the same time in order to completely uproot this garbage. I've already broke out the CD-R's and backed up my photos and stuff that I don't want to lose. Unfortunately I'll lose all these wonderful torrented games, a few of them I more than likely won't be able to find again. I'm pretty sure I got it from a bad installer worked into the Cabelas Big Game Hunter ISO torrent I downloaded from piratebay. I guess that's just the risk you willingly take when e-thievin' games.
