Quake / Re: Looking for a Q2 engine...
« on: December 06, 2010, 12:19:37 PM »
I tested & berserker isn't compatible with local old Q2 mods but it can connect to r1q2 dedicated servers running old mods (IE the Q2 SDK).
So it can't act as a server for non-berserker clients, but can be a client for old servers instead. I wonder if any of the better quakers from TS community use berserker. But probably it doesn't even support Anti-Cheat? But the big plus is, its under active development (other than other engine mods).

Now this data could be collected, for each server and compiled into some sort of neat format or in game server browsing tool. Like I said, it's messy, but it's something to start from. I'm currently thinking of ways to implement it.
If you change something, maybe it would be a good idea not to built on a clean Quake2 3.21 code base, but rather try to add it to some of the more common clients like r1q2, egl or q2pro? This way many could benefit from it. I don't know if its possible to contribute to those projects, though.

What are some cool ideas for features that aren't available in any known client - yet would be useful to make?

Anyone have any ideas? I'd be interested in trying to implement some things. Just need ideas mainly. I've done a lot of work with the engine and dll code over the years. I haven't done much lately.. might be cool to get back into it though. Only thing is, maybe it would be ideal to start from another engine (the best open source one).

I used to try and talk about coding on here back in 2004 or whatever, but these forums were just getting started back then. Never would have guessed it would have got so big.

What I would like as a mapper are new features for use in new maps. For example the possibility of having mp3 background music in a map, maybe shaders like in Q3A or graphical effects, which can be triggered by new surface properties or entities. This way existing maps would stay as they are, with the possibility to create overrides for them or totally new maps. I would prefer this model over global new features, which would affect the whole game.
Furthermore what would be most pleasant is a well functioning ingame server browser, and...the possibility for other mods to load the pak files from xatrix and rogue mission packs (like now they use the pak files from baseq2 directory). This way nice new things like xatrix CTF or TDM would become possible.

Oh and I forgot: moving lights like in xatrix, new light effects and moving translucent brushes would be nice. Also new possibilities for having "rain" inside a map (currently rather difficult).

Here is also a nice overview with Q2 engines: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~jimw/q2/
If I wasn't on a Mac I would surely try out Berserker Quake 2. Looks promising - but windows only.

Hello Acer,

thank you very much for the great links. I found the required linux binaries for running gladiator bot. Works perfectly - even in r1q2!!

Thank You!

Hello everyone,

I would like to run good old gladiator bot on linux. Eraser Ultra works with r1q2 (tested), but gladiator bot was far better I remember. Unfortunately I can't find the linux binaries anymore...

Does anyone of you still have the file gladq2096_linux-x86-glibc.tar.gz ? The old download links are broken.

It would be a real shame if the gladiator bot linux binaries would be lost forever?

Just stop discussing about which map is nicest and which map to have on which server (its not so important).

Just go on the server, play, and "mymap" your favorite map. Thats all.

Most important for me would be a Mac OS X binary. Everything else is secondary. Support for damage skins would be nice though. And maybe an integrated gladiator bot for having some server cvar like "min_players".

@magical pig: that seems to be another "SquiSHeR" with a 3 inside his name. Its not me. ;) But thank you for reporting! Nice to know I'm not the only one using this nick.

@QwazyWabbit: Thank you very much for all your efforts. As soon as I'm able to set up a 10.4 testing environment on VirtualBox I will fix this issue. But maybe you are quicker? ;)

Hello everyone,

The qstat binary is inside the .wdgt file (right click, show package contents). I now put online a new version with universal qstat binary (updated link in first post). I hope this fixes the crash? Which OS X Version do you use? PPC or Intel?

I use the Q2 Macintosh port from fruits of dojo: http://www.fruitz-of-dojo.de
Its the only one I know of. Its okay to play online but it doesn't have any additions - its an 1:1 port of Quake 2 v 3.21.

Quake / Mac OS X Dashboard Server Browser
« on: March 07, 2010, 05:44:34 AM »
Hello

I developed a small Dashboard Widget for Mac OS X. It uses the unix command line utility qstat to display information about 5 game servers of your choice. Its very nice if you want to keep track of whats going on on your favorite servers.

Screenshots:

[Update] New version
- should now work on PPC systems (included universal binary of qstat)
- bugfix joining servers

This is the first release and in case there are any Mac users here I would really appreciate some feedback.

The case is solved. It turned out it was really my bittorrent/amule downloads. After rebooting my router the ping was fine again.  ;D

Hello again,

I tried all scripts I found:

x7: most time shoots just one rocket in front of me, in maybe 1 of 10 cases it works perfect just like i want it
http://tastyspleen.net/quake/forums/index.php?topic=11319.msg120254#msg120254

peewee: freezes the screen for 1 second but shoots only one rocket in front of me (as if lookdown wouldn't work)
http://tastyspleen.net/quake/forums/index.php?topic=11319.msg120255#msg120255
@peewee: could you have a look? It seems you forgot lookdown?

haunted: freezes the screen for 1 second but shoots only one rocket in front of me (as if lookdown wouldn't work)
http://tastyspleen.net/quake/forums/index.php?topic=1798.msg27392#msg27392

daelmun: works perfect, but fires more than one rocket and flys too high :(
http://tastyspleen.net/quake/forums/index.php?topic=393.msg5152#msg5152
I just read that dealmun died in a car accident :(

I'm using Q2 3.21 for Mac (Fruits of Dojo port).
