Don't get me wrong, I liked Rage Against The Machine, but I tend to think Tom Morello is a little overrated. Everyone's always sucked his dick by saying he's some kinda guitar god and how he makes all these really cool sounds with his guitar, but I just ain't convinced of his genius in doing it. I think maybe some of the people saying it are people who've never picked up a guitar before. Most of the shit I've ever heard is gimmicky effect crap that any intermediate level guitar player can do. People always say "He makes the guitar sound like its not a guitar!" Nah, I ain't convinced. Jimmy Page could do some cool shit on guitar with a cello bow. Duane Allman was barely in his 20's and could play the fuck out of a guitar with a glass medicine bottle slide. Even Eddie Van Halen used a little processing to make guitars sound like a truck horn (the intro to Running With The Devil was not a horn, that was a guitar). Dimebag Darrell could do some crazy shit with both a double locking tremolo and a DigiTech Whammy effect, although the whammy effect is another gimmick that pretty much anyone could do. And of course Jimi Hendrix could chop the strings on a guitar to just make it sound all-around different WITHOUT any type of extra materials or effects. After hearing much of what Tom Morello has ever put out with RATM and Audioslave, I just don't think he's quite the same caliber as these other "guitar gods" people sometimes group him in with.
