Live Performances
« on: December 11, 2008, 01:44:28 PM »
Didn't want to muck up the "Obscure Music Videos" thread, so I created this one.

Any band or artist can sound good in the studio with the proper producer and effects to mask the flaws of the talentless cacophony. The live show is a great indicator of how talented a band really is. They can't edit and piece together guitar tracks like a puzzle, they can't really double track vocals to thicken them unless they have pre-recorded samples they play, the drummer can't double track drums, and the lead guitarist has to either remember how to play the solo pieces he's written or else he has to be proficient enough to improvise it on the spot without it sounding out of place.

Anyhow, post your favorite live performance videos here. There's buttloads of them all over YouTube, sometimes I lose all track of time browsing through these damn things.

Came across this while killing some time on YouTube. I've always thought Lynyrd Skynyrd was one of the best live bands ever. They weren't very showy and hyper on stage, but they always played their songs as well if not better than the studio recordings. Here's a black a white video of them performing Gimme Back My Bullets. The video says it's from March of 1976, but I believe it could be from sometime in late 1975.

Well I've posted them somewhere before, but 3 that come to mind were all at Woodstock:

I'm Going Home - Ten Years After  for Alvin Lee's great guitar performance.
Soul Sacrifice - Sanatana  for the sheer energy and vibe, and also the drummer.
Suite Judy Blue Eyes - CS &N  altough they had only played together a bit, but pulled off this complicated vocal song perfectly.

Yeah, I always thought that Ten Years After and Hendrix Experience were the high points of that whole weekend. I've never been particularly impressed with Santana although they did have a few really good tunes.

Since we're doing the classic rock thing at the moment...

I've always loved Paul Rodgers voice. He has that THING called "balls","delivery", "soul", and "talent" which is not present in most other vocalists. Even today, when guys like Robert Plant can't carry a tune worth a bucket of warm spit, he can still belt it out damn near as good as he used to back in the early 70's. And here's some proof:

This is Free at Woodstock. Probably one of their WORST performances I've ever seen. Paul looks like he's tripping his fucking balls off.

Free - All Right Now (Woodstock 1969)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2B2clFsLA3w

Free - I'll Be Creepin' (probably from 1971)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odLL_s3UJgs

I couldn't find much decent quality Bad Comapny performances from the 70's and 80's. I did find plenty from this particular show, which I'd guess was from sometime in 2001 or 2002 right before they broke up again. Original bassist Boz Burrell died back in 2006, so no chance at another original reunion again. Oh well. Check out Paul's vocal flexibility in this performance. To be as old as he is, I'm surprised he still has the ability to be that accurate with his notes. You can tell he takes care of himself these days, he's not some fat old washed-out fucker like the rest of the guys from that era.

Bad Company - Ready For Love (probably from 2002)

Came across this one while killing some time. It was far too interesting NOT to share it. :D I always liked The Stooges, even though I'm really not a big punk rock fan... and even though I never quite understood what the fuck was wrong with Iggy Pop. Something tells me a good urinalysis could pinpoint it though.

And speaking of The Stooges, I just learned that guitarist Ron Asheton died today.  :(

Oh yeah, GWAR is one of the most entertaining live shows one could ever hope to see. A word of advice, if you plan on standing within about 30 or 40 feet of the stage, don't wear anything you don't mind having covered in blood.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUgse0B2xHo

GWAR is actually a really good band, but most people find it hard to take them serious as musicians because of the outlandish topics of their songs as well their appearance. Kinda like Frank Zappa, I guess. The man was musical genius, he could play the living dog shit out of a guitar, and it would take a person probably 3 weeks without sleeping or taking any kind of break to listen to his entire catalog. But the topics of most of his songs were so damn weird that it turned a lot of people off, including me. I like some of his stuff in moderation, but the majority of it was just too weird for my palette.

I've seen these guys a few times in concert. One of the best sounding live bands around these days in my opinion. A lot of bands sound good in the studio and pretty crappy in person, but Sevendust always sound even better in person in my opinion. I didn't get to attend this particular show even though it was shot here in GA.

I really like this particular song, especially the verse melody and the chorus riff which features, in my opinion, a really odd pairing of chords that I wouldn't normally think would make a good choice for a tune. But with Lajon's multi-tracked harmonized vocals, it sounds extremely powerful and hypnotizing. I included a link to the album track too, in case you wanna hear what the song sounds like a little better.

Every now and then, for me, I hear a performance and the song gives me mad chills.  This is one.  IF you can, listen to the whole thing, turn it up, soak it in.  Just a powerful song, with lyrics and music spewing goodness.  Great song, the way it builds, music hand in hand with the lyrics.

Another White Zombie video. From their La Sexorsisto days. A half-way decent bootleg video compared to a lot of others I've seen.

Was browsing around YouTube and came across several live clips of Death from Chuck Schuldiner's early years. In the years before his WAAAAYYY too early passing, his voice changed SHITLOADS. He always had one of the most interesting and unique voices that set him far apart from everyone else in the genre.

This is one of his "greatest hits" I guess you could say. From his second album released in 1988, Leprosy.

Death - Pull The Plug (Live - 1988)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgK60w0yH8Q

And just for comparison, here's one of Chuck's last performances of the same song. He sounds like crap to me, nothing like he ever did in the years before the tumor (unknown at the time) started getting the best of him. Less of a hideous roar and more like... a stepped on cat. This entire show was released as a DVD and a CD to help pay for his cancer treatment in 2001. But alas, he ended up passing away probably a month or two after it's release from complications due to pneumonia brought on by the cancer medication.

My favorite live performance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1pniHxu9Ug

Good blues, good rock, as well as good(insert several genres here) will have a lot of blues elements and is written similar to blues... I'm very thankful that other music was invented after blues :>
