If nothing can exist for infinite, then you're saying either god appeared out of nothingness, or matter appeared out of nothingness. How is this possible?

 :???:

How can we as humans....mortals whom have a life-span that is not even a vapor in time?   Of course we don't think anything could be forever, because our own lives are very fleeting.       Which brings me to think that evolution in itself is a strange and futile idea if thought about...why bother evolving to survive to adapt to a world in which we ourselves mean nothing in the big spectrum of things?   Whats our point?  to live on and silently wait until nature decides "ok, enough is enough" and then were dust in the wind?   Im sorry if I believe life does not happen by chance, but still my questions goes unanswered by anyone (I even looked for other answers all over the net, all the ney sayers of god usually don't have any idea how we DID come about)  How can you create something...from nothing....that statment in itself is enough to point to some higher lifeforce....because I don't see how any other option is viable, do you know how complicated living beings are?  the make up of our cells?  our different systems?   our brains?   Everything about life is complex, so complex I believe the chances that "umm...we just kinda went *POOF* and here we are...alive"...doesn't make any sense to me.

Well, first off.. you didnt really explain much about your own beliefs.. your analogies are completely irrelevant, and if you have anything to say other than "whatever dahang says", let me know.

Haha, hold yer horses there, bucko.  Very embarassed and sad to say, but I've been posting on this thread from the beginning.  Feel free to read the first 40 pages (or whatever) before dahang started posting and see if I've changed my tune.

How could anything have ALWAYS EXISTED???

I have no idea why you claim my analogies are irrelevant.  I'm saying, in essence, PICK ONE:

  1. matter and energy always existed
  2. matter and energy appeared out of 'nowhere' at some point
  3. god always existed
  4. god appeared out of 'nowhere' at some point

It seems like you prefer #4.  You don't like the idea of matter & energy always existing, and if stuff suddenly did appear out of infinite nothingness one day, you want it to be something special, like god.

But to me it's amazing enough that stuff just appeared out of nowhere oneday.  I don't see why some hypercomplex supernatural entity would just suddenly appear out of nowhere.  To me, #4 seems less likely than #2.

BTW, if there's anything in particular about my beliefs I haven't explained that you would like to read about, just ask.

quadz

yes, i really am saying that something sort of like that probably did happen. either way, since it defies everything we know as science, i believe that whatever was the first part to emerge was something extraordinary (God?).  lol, very hard to say how everything really went down.  :?

Well, as I've already said, if something appeared out of nothingness, then it wasn't truly nothingness. I am willing to say it is _impossible_ for something to appear out of true nothingness. There had to be something there to work with for something to emerge.

why bother evolving to survive to adapt to a world in which we ourselves mean nothing in the big spectrum of things?

What do you mean why bother? Throughout our history we did not have conscious control over our evolution.

Whats our point?

I think there

1. what I mean by why bother is whats the point...life is here because...?...

And as I said, why must there be a point? (Even though I think there is.)

2. when I said I didn't believe life happened by chance, I mean it took devine creation of some sort to spark life, not just a chance ceatain elements formed life

So God decided to wait 14 billion years for humans to be created? He wanted them to evolve from lower life forms?

Have you considered the

I'm agnostic because I don't KNOW there isn't a god.

To me, the position of agnosticism has always seemed like the 50/50 toss up over the existence of god. I am agnostic (technically) as well, since I don't know there isn't one, but I identify myself as an atheist since I view the probability that one exists as very low.

Personally, I'd like to see less self-labeling as agnostic (unless the individual is truly stuck in the 50/50 range) and just pick a side :>. It's only a belief, after all.

Maybe it's a little like my politics.  If I HAD to choose between registering as republican or democrat, I'd pick democrat.  But in fact I'm registered as nonpartisan.  I don't really like the extremes in either party.  But I do like some ideas from both.  I'm sort of a fiscal conservative, pro small government, but liberal on social issues.

If I HAD to choose between theist and atheist, I'd definitely pick athiest.  But it doesn't quite feel right as a self-description.  Maybe it's because of the spiritual dimensions I believe exist but that I don't understand.  Dunno.

Do you think these spiritual dimensions = supernatural intelligence? Or rather a branch of what one would call natural science - an undiscovered realm?

Or is it all simply "incomprehensible"? (and incomprehensibility, as we both know, does not add strength to such an entity's existence)

So basically what you guys are getting at is the possibility of god is slim to none and death is most likely a painless extinction?    just a question

God's existence is slim to none in my opinion.

I assume death can both be painful and painless. But that is irrelevant to the theism vs atheism debate.

There is no good reason to assume there is an afterlife in my opinion.

Well, what if life and consciousness depended on a kind of bioelectric energy that existed on another plane that is not currently detectable by our present science.

Thats another thing, the bible depicts heaven and hell like water and rock--Heaven is paradice, streets of gold etc.....Hell is eternal torture for a lifetime of sins....but tell me this...is hell all that bad to someone who self-mutilates?......And what is heaven? aka paradice, this can be a very big spectrum of posibilities to alot of different people.....whats heaven to some, may not be to others....like me for instance, paradice is sitting in a big hot-tub, puffing a spliff relaxing....but who else would enjoy my version of heaven? just a thought  :yessign:
