the thing that drew my interest the most about this article was the implication that evolved traits don't necessarily have to be ones that cause an individual duck to be more desireable to other ducks, or cause the duck to have a distinct survival advantage in order to be passed on and deemed "useful" by the process of natural selection.

In this case the trait happens to be complicated vaginal design that allows the female duck complete control over which male duck fathers her offspring.. (male ducks often gangrape a female during mating season regardless of wether they are desireable fathers)

It doesn't make the female duck look better, or survive more effectively, but it does give them an advantage when it comes to choosing who to combine their genes with in order to make the most effective offspring that they can.

It's kinda a secondary benefit that only affects the following generation in terms of "survival" ability.
(female ducks tend to choose the biggest strongest male in order to maximize their offspring's survival ability, and gangrape by less qualified suitors would produce less effective offspring in any duck without this vaginal design)

ok, back to duck penises.. this is hilarious because haunted and i lived on a creek growing up and about 20 ducks used to come by all the time and we ended up feeding them, they were basically our pets for a while when we were little.. i'm glad the article quadz posted listed them as an exception to the monagamy, since we had this one dude name quackers that would just PWN females all day, when not even in mating season... and the funny thing is, after he fucked a bitch on land, he'd run off dragging his footlong (nojoke) penis behind
