i would say yes.  also without fear being part of human morality, i believe things would have been so messed up that civilization wouldn't of been developed to the point where you could post on forums

if people werent scared of  what happened to them after they died.   there would be a lot of chaos going on, because millions more people would be out raping, and whatever else fit their needs, regardlless of wether being moral is right or wrong.

you make a good point, but let me point something out. since atheists aren't scared of what happens when they die, why aren't they committing chaos? 850 million people in this world are agnostic/secular/nonreligious/atheist. you can rightfully assume a good portion of these people are full blown atheists. why is it that only .2% of the jail population consists of atheists? perhaps because one of the sole purposes of becoming an atheist is that there simply isn't a need for the supernatural rubbish to help guide morality. the average atheist is more intelligent and more educated than the average religious person for a reason. i agree, if many uneducated/unintelligent people (which tend to be more religious than not) got rid of their fear of hell, YES there may be chaos. that's why religion is a good thing for those who simply cannot think, but somehow the scare tactics make them have ethics. for those who are more intelligent, it's simply unnecessary to pick one of hundreds of religions and claim to be absolutely certain you're right.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. Are you saying everyone is scared of death? Are you saying religious people aren't scared of death? Non-religious people are scared of death? Suicide bombers certainly aren't scared of death.

Humans have some inatate "morality", an instict if you will. Like the instinct of a mother protecting her young. This is coded in our genes, because it has an evolutionary advantage. A species that murders each other would not survive very long. Also, civilization creates moral demans. The needs of the many over your individual needs.

In the grand scheme of things all actions are neutral, and you won't be punished by a sadistic god after you die. However, in order for our species to exist we have to be somewhat moral, and not kill each other.

My point is religion does not create morality. In fact it may do the opposite, due to religious intolerance, idiots fighting holy wars, and blowing themselves up.
