I'll have a head-start on the competition then.
that's 1 vote in the bag! w00t!

looks like I'll have to start campaigning for my write-in victory..

back on topic though..

If anyone is responsible for God "letting things happen to us", then it would have to be God.
If he exists, and he is all-powerful, then no one and no thing is going to influence his/her/it's decisions.
The blame game only works when the buck keeps getting passed.

Quote from: quakeduke
Actually,  (here goes)  the witch trials had little to do with religion and a whole lot to do with politics
it's safe to say things much worse than witch trials happen because people take religious texts as the word of god.  it's imperative people understand these texts are not the word of god as you preach (no offence).

None percieved, none taken, and I agree much worse than witch trials happen because people take religious texts as the word of god.

I do have to take exception with the latter part of the statement. I'm honestly courious, not trying to be contentious - If you've never heard me preach, read any of my writings, how would you know whether or not I preach any religious texts as being the word of God?

also for those who think i'm an absolute idiot, that has no idea what he's talking about.  well before 9/11 i predicted a terrorist attack from muslim extremists;

Some of us were expecting this type of thing (and worse) from all "brands" of extremeists as far back as the late '70's. We are actually surprised there hasn't been more activity than there has been. The Socio-political climate has been perfect for it for well over 30 years. Not that I'm complaining you understand. I like being wrong in such things.

christians leaders actually accepted the big bang theory because it implies a god.

You're not far off here. Some feel the pressure to explain "why" they believe in God, and "how" everything happened. If they feel they can "come together" on what is percieved to be "reasonable" explaination that might satisfy the greater part of "believers" and "non-believers" this can happen, although I suspect many of those who might subscribe to the theory privately say "Told ya God did it. Who cares how?" and if the theory changes, their views outwardly will change with it to reflect those changes while inwardly keeping the same attitude. Personally, I have a problem with that, but, as I say, it's personal. :)

the answers science will put forth will reasonably discount a god for man; however i still will think they are wrong, because i don't believe the scope of there answers will discount a god, and i have a stronger personal belief there is a god.

As history has proven over and over, "reason" doesn't necessary = right :)

but of course i'm a total idiot and nothing i said above requires intellegence

I don't believe for a moment you're and idiot.

well i don't know, do you? the bible tells us how things were created, and what happens after death, because god told us(however you want to say he told us).
that's the bible, so if you don't believe it, and preach it as a story, good for you.  if not (like most others) then it's going to lead to a lot of people dying in the name of religion

Same reason all these people think they can influence the moon by throwing stones at it, influence the sun by putting sod in the fork of a tree, etc. etc. etc.

Really.

well, the easiest way to answer that is to divine who actually instituted all of those religious practices in the first place..
the answer: humans.

humans decided that those actions (prayer/rock throwing/animal sacrifice) were capable of allowing them to influence the actions/decisions of their own personal version of a higher power and humans are the creators of all religion. coincidence? I think not.

I have a feeling this argument would have much more to it, if we were to meet another species of intelligent beings that shared a similarly designed religion to our own, because as of now, all of the similarities between human religions can be effectively attributed to the genetically ingrained similarity of all humans to all other humans.

Our religions are all the same because our minds are all the same and our need for answers is identical even if our questions are phrased in different languages and to different gods.

This is a great and interesting thread, my turn to reply.

There are so many religions. What one do we go with?
People have killed each other, just because of different religions.
WARS !!! Millions of people have died as a result of this.

My View

I belive there is a " Higher Power" , lets just call it that

I feel we are here for a learning experience "LIFE"

if we do not learn, we are sent back ( here )... IF we do ,we move on the the next level. 4th demension, perhaps.

This could go on and on, but that's it summerized.

Peace

I have to stand by what I've said before and  teach as I believe Jesus did - present the teaching and leave it up to the hearer to accept or reject it.

of course we must maintain that you will go to heaven, and the skeptic an eternity in hell.

...why are so many people apparently afraid of the idea that the Universe just doesn't care about them (any more than it cares about anything else)?

simple..
If the universe/god/higher power doesn't care, it leaves the burden of caring up to us...
and humans are selfish, apathetic, and morally corrupt to the point that we are incapable of caring about such things that have no discernable effect on us, or those things that go beyond the scope of our understanding and our ability to observe.

It is beyond our abilities to be selfless to the point that we care about everything in the universe, so we create an intangible something that is able to. otherwise we could just be floating around the cosmos with no purpose and no one to mourn us when we destroy ourselves or screw up our little corner of the place.

we could fall down and skin our knee and no cosmic "mommy" would show up to put a band-aid on it and kiss it all better!

my thoughts on the supernatural: god and satan are different aspects of the same person....revealing man's desire to be good and at the same time capable of evil....god and satan are kinda like brad pitt's and edward nortons character in fight club...same person.....also, the concepts attributed to god seem to be too human-like, for instance....to say to people "believe in me or go to hell" sounds more like a human construct than something a divine being would say....but then again, how would i know what a divine being think or act? i dont, im just saying that god of the bible has way too many human type thought patterns- an obvious sign of imparting human wishes onto a fictional character.
