I mean, how many of us years down the road are going to tell our kids of the glorious quake matches we had and the campers we killed?  ;D By that time, our kids will be hooked into their own VR device playing Quake 7 maybe  ;)

Geeze man, I don't know... My grandkids (boys and goils) really love beating the crap outta gramps playing DN3D... I've introed them to Q but they still like DN bestest.
Oh well - Can't say as I blame 'em - I still fire up DN3D occasionally on a DOS drive and modem over to my son-in-laws to kick butt and chew bubble gum:)

What a great thread on the timless fps gaming issues: camping, spawning, cheap play, sportsmanship, etc.

As being part of the old farts club of players... I just accept the fact that I am playing amongst a community of majority kids for the most part (college and under), and this may not be totally accurate for Q2 cause most kids think this is OLD.  Thus for the most part, I expect to encounter the attitudes, lack of sportsmanship and cheap gameplay ... so I just put up with it and accept it as part of the game.  If it eventually gets to me, then I'll just leave the server... no big deal... I can load up Half Life 2, Halo or try to finish Doom3, etc.... or goto another server: Mages, DS Edge.....

Oh, and ffa is "free for all" so any weap including the BFG / quad should be considered fair game.  If a 40 pinger rails a 200 pinger... no one ever yells out "cheap" or my fave example is a 40 pinger chaning a 200 pinger... but that seems to be more acceptable than the 200 pinger using BFG or quad.

I think it's one thing to play amongst players you know and enjoy... that's prolly the best way of approaching the game.... but to try to instill rules on a server such as what they did at Velocity, can totally turn off an entire community.  So we have to accept the "bad" with the good.  Hey, hunting down campers can be a fun game  ;) ;) ;)

You can't really be angry/disappointed with someone for conditions beyond their control.  A 40 pinger doesn't ping exactly 40ms because he wants to, that's a physical thing (distance from server, connection type, etc.) totally unrelated to any specific game.  Just the same as the 200ms pinger doesn't chose to ping that high, otherwise we'd all have zero pings and it'd be a non-issue.

To be honest, I really don't care all that much what happens.  Like Foo said, you can always leave and play elsewhere.  But for me, I prefer playing without the BFG, quad, etc.  Some things I just don't enjoy, it's just a preference.

So, alot of opinions have been on this forum, some true, some, maybe embelished? But heres the truth.I have been thinking on why I can't seem to get myself to try at this game latly..and well I've come  to a revalation.I don't want to try because I know that there are more people than I'd like out there that are better than me.
That in and of itself helps me.I have accepted that im in the upper 15%..and not the 5% I'd like to be.Knowing that frees me now to pursue the refinery of what skills I have.
I can't keep the list of how many people can beat me anymore.I give up  ;D yay!So those who beat me, either you camped well, or killed me fair and sqaure, so right on!

You can't handle the truth!!!  ;)

Does it take Frags to be good at Q2? Frags=skillz???? lets Debate...What do you think?

CrAzY

there's a lot more to the game than the score..

I find it more fun in tourney mode to have under 10 deaths a map then to have an absurd amount of kills

Everyone has their own kinds of skill......I may not be judged a good player because a lot of the time I just throw myself at the enemy hoping I don't die and try to deal as much damage as possible......I almost always get a whole ton of deaths but end up winning the game. :)

Personally, I hate people that just run around avoiding me picking up armor and health, and as soon as i hit them once they run away again...

but i suppose its a legit way of fighting........ ggrrrr come out and fight pussies!!!

I don't really have much of a problem with camping...unless the person is shooting down a hole, at a spawn pad, or bfg camping or somethin lame like that.

either way...the game is damn fun and has been since it came out and i was playin on my 200 mhz , 32 mb ram, 8 mb voodoo 1 and pinging 300..I used to kick the crap out of them low pingers too..... :p

Are frags important?  Well that seems like a trick question, well of course they are.  If frags weren't important then you'd have a game like Rocket Arena where you jump into a match 1v1 and you play 1 frag until your dead and then the winner plays the next person.  That's not what we're playing.  When we're talking about DM which is what I think most of us have been playing, and what we are referring to here, the whole game revolves around frags.  You have a timed game and in the end it's who gets to 30 frag first.  I don't see anything wrong with wanting to be that guy that's at the top when the game ends.  If I didn't care about that and I was more concerned about "polite" ways of playing I might do 1v1 or rocket arena, which is great if that's what you're into.  As for me I don't see how you can even question if getting alot of frags is important.  That

just 2 cents here...   as I lose most of the time in one on one.

When I play a really good player....  sometimes its not the frags that are important,...
but getting that ONE FRAG is!

Agree.  Sometimes I'll win on a DM server but know that every time I ran into one guy it was a good fight or he took me out.  Same is true in reverse, for me at least.

Sometimes there are really two games going on: (1) the general FFA/DM game with a dozen players and (2) a 1v1 between the top two players.

yeah I love pickin out one guy (or one skin) and concentrating mainly on them in a FFA game..
I used to piss off Mr_X on the rails server all the time, 'cause his skin/model stood out like a sore thumb.
It was always the bright blue cyborg skin in my pak and barely anyone ever uses it, but him.

I'd repeatedly frag him while ignoring all the athenas and grunts running around, until he'd get all pissy and leave.

I ALWAYS target the male/r2red skin if i see someone running around with it.  For some reason - I'm not too fond of anyone that wears that skin.  I suppose i've had bad experiences with people wearing it.

Even tho this is an old thread, ill contribute my 2 cents.

Of course frag count doesn't mean squat!  Any server you go to you can rack up the kills by going after the people that just spawn and only have a blaster/shotgun/etc.  Imo, I think highly of the people that will actually let these people run away and get a better weapon before you fight them.  It just makes for a more enjoyable game, and a friendly atmosphere.  No one like to get killed 5 sec after they jump off a spawn pad.

I normally only target the players using any skin.  :D

(If I have to download a model and all of it's soundfiles (how boring) I will seek that one out)
