Frag quality not quantity is important.  :P I usually get my bovine ass kicked, but those occasional good frags of a skilled player make the whole thing worth while. Fragin campers is also very injoyable.  ;D

Well, I don't think frags are skills exactly. Are making baskets in a basketball game skills? If so, then Shaq is pretty skill less  :P The point is to have fun watching yourself and others get blown to bloody gibs all over the map. When it ceases being fun and is more of a "I have bigger balls than you" contest, you have to stop and think, will these skills I have in quake get me a high paying job?  :D Just my 2 cents  ;D

I'd tend to think that if most people were being honest, they'd be happier winning games then ending dead last.  Now, of course, the fact that they're playing at all suggests they derive enjoyment out of it.  But it then becomes a question of "would you be even more pleased if you won?"  I'd say most people would have to (if truly honest) say yes.

So, by that measure, frags are certainly important.  Are they the be all and end all of playing?  Hardly.  But seriously, try as some people might to deny the truth, it's our natural sense of competition that brings us to a game like this.

That said, there are definitely some people who seemingly are more interested in some of the sideshow aspects of Q2, like finding ways to jump up to ledges or do other things not frag-intensive.  I would put Matster[SIR] in that category.  When she used to play here, Pretzel was another who was into the intricasies of the game.  Some pad campers might know they'll rarely win, but still get enjoyment out of irritating others.  So, there are other motivations.

But for me, I'm in it to win, most of the time.  But my day isn't ruined when I don't, lol.   I'd have a lot of bad days if that weren't the case!

I find that on the RARE occasions that I do happen to win a game, that I'm happy that I won, but looking back it was so much damn work that it wasn't all that much fun.  (Except for 1v1, that is always good to win)
Running around, taking out campers, making the occasional good rail shot and then finishing somewhere in the middle of the pack makes it easier for me to play longer at one sitting.  Less stress  ;D

Defending zee breedge from zee intrudeers is also very fun  ;D

The only skill was getting the rail and making it out of there alive.
Once I had the rail, it took no skill to fire it down a crowded hallway.

Trust me, I'd find a way to miss with the rail in a crowded hallway.  My best maps are the shotgun-intensive ones.  That pretty much sums up my aiming ability, heheh.

Heh, This question makes me think back to the old days on "Rats - On - Toast", when Rats, Pretz, Shloo, some of the older quakers of this lil gang, and my self contimplated on making a mod for quake 2 with a rather unique scoring system based off of this question.

Basically u got points instead of frags based on the manner in which u killed a person. Heads shots counted as more points compared to leg shots. Campers recieved negative or a small amount of points while those who killed campers got lots of points. If u fragged someone with a power up u scored uber points and if u like killed someone with the invaulnerablility powerup on u scored like 200-500 points depending on how much we figured alot would be.

So like Fmax said this mod theory was based on the concept of quality over quantity. Sure anyone can score 30 frags in 3 mins like some of the better players on Tastey Spleen. Only a handful can do it using pure skill over poor skill though.

(PS Yes it is possible to kill a person with the invaulnerability on, you just have to know how  ;)  )

Like Clan FAS say's "Frags Ain't Skillz". Winning a map is almost always my intent when the play starts. Winning at all cost...NO! Camping, spamming, quad BFG, Etc.
really don't need much skill and annoy me to no end. I agree with Sgt. Dick aka IOU, that a 1 on 1 match is a better representation of skills, and then only if the connection speed / lag are equal. Skills in DM, well that's up to you. Spec. a player and make up your own mind about skills. Defensive as well as offensive. Can a player use the machine gun to take out a player armed with rail or rocket? As for me, some maps just eat my lunch. While I can tear it up on others, running, jumping and mid-air railing.
