I got this Goffin's Cockatoo about 17 or 18 years ago from a very reputable and experienced bird store that deals in all kinds of exotic birds. When I got it, they mentioned that they couldn't really determine the sex of this particular breed until it reached full maturity, at which point eye color "might" be a factor in determining the sex. Well, come to find out after doing some research on my own that there is NO WAY to visually determine the sex. The only reliable methods are with a DNA blood test, a surgical sexing examination (which can only be performed in emergency situations because of how risky it is to perform surgery on a bird), or... waiting to see if it ever drops an egg. So for the last 18 years I've been calling him Samson and thinking he was a male, especially since he seems to be so aggressive towards my other birds I've ever had. I come in from cutting the grass today and uncover his cage to find a god damn EGG sitting in the bottom of the cage. So I guess now I gotta come up with a new name for HER. Mind officially BLOWN. After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I just looked at ~~him~~ her and said "YOU FUCKING LIED TO ME!!!"

Now it's got me wondering about my other parrot, a Timneh African Grey, a smaller variety thats very similar in appearance to regular African Grey parrots. After doing some more research, it looks like it's almost impossible to be able to visually determine the sex of this breed as well. I've seen webpages explaining how feather markings and colorings can sometimes differ between males and females, but it isn't all that reliable.
