http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/15/nyregion/witness-accounts-in-midtown-hammer-attack-show-the-power-of-false-memory.html

Brief article on the unreliability of eyewitness testimony, in this case regarding a police shooting incident that took place a couple days ago. (Includes video of what actually transpired, contrary to multiple witness accounts.)

it's not a false belief, they're idiots.

No, there's decades of research indicating our memories are frequently faulty in just these sorts of ways.

http://www.amazon.com/Invisible-Gorilla-How-Intuitions-Deceive/dp/0307459667/

This includes so-called 'flashbulb' memories of important/traumatic/emotional events, such as, "Where were you when you learned about the 9/11/2001 attacks?"

One's memory of such an event may still feel as acutely seared into consciousness as it ever did, yet chances are that memory has been rewritten over the years so that it no longer corresponds with your original experience.

Researchers have been studying this for a long time. The day after an event like 9/11 or the Challenger space shuttle explosion in 1986, etc., they collect statements from people about their recollections as soon as possible -- usually the day after.

Then they check back and get their statements again months later, a year later, five years, ten years later...

These so-called flashbulb memories still feel accurate yet they commonly degrade over time. (Sometimes to the extent of being in a completely different location, surrounded by different people, etc.)

Eyewitness testimony is also notoriously unreliable, even though people are being asked what happened shortly after the event. So there may be different processes at work than what takes more time with the flashbulb memories. (Personal biases no doubt play some role in shaping how the incident 'seemed' when it was witnessed, thereby coloring the internal narrative that becomes the memory...)

The book linked above digests scientific research into both kinds of memories (eyewitness and flashbulb) as well as several other cognitive illusions to which our brains are subject.

I think body cameras are needed for all cops.  This will not only catch if they are doing something wrong, but it can also show when they are doing things right.  Body cameras are expensive and they may not always get the view you need, but I think it is worth the investment.

Body cameras are still problematic. San Diego California just had a fatal shooting of a man, reported to have threatened a store clerk with a knife, by a police officer who failed to turn on his body camera. NO VIDEO of the shooting from a body cam, NO KNIFE found on the dead man or on the scene, just a scabbard.

The camera in this case was a waste of money, time and effort.

There is also nothing preventing an officer from NOT turning on his camera, beating the snot out of you to the point of death.

Four Fullerton California police officers were acquitted of murder by a jury even after the primary perpetrator was heard ON AUDIO RECORDER to have threatened the victim with great bodily harm while putting on his gloves and the four officers were ON SURVEILLANCE VIDEO seen to beat and stomp and kick the victim while the victim was heard to plead for his life. The victim died in the hospital of his injuries with severe head trauma.

Albuquerque PD officers shot a retreating homeless man IN THE BACK six times at close range with an assault rifle and fired beanbag rounds at him after he was dead. ALL OF THE ACTION RECORDED on police body and helmet cameras. The officers were given paid administrative leave.

Technology isn't the remedy. The cure is to hold police accountable for criminal acts committed against people they encounter in the line of duty. Technology might help with evidence but when there is no conviction even when the evidence shows blatant criminality there is a serious problem in our society.

I kinda see it as a problem with money first and foremost. State and federal govt is spending such a huge chunk of the tax pie on other shit and not nearly enough on police (and education too, but not the point of this post). So it means that police get paid jack shit. And when they don't get paid shit for such a pain in the ass dangerous job, then nobody wants to do it. And when nobody wants to do it, then they'll take just about anyone they can get to wear a uniform. They really don't have the luxury of being too picky and digging too deep into the backgrounds, personal ethics, and psychological state of the potential candidates. And too many of the cops they're employing are probably not intelligent enough to have such an important job. Not saying all cops are crayon-eating drooly-smiling retards, but I've definitely met my fair share of cops who I'd swear on a stack of bibles couldn't pass a high school GED test. And too many of them do NOT have the right temperament for the job. You don't make a person a kindergarten teacher when they are prone to fits of violent anger. You don't make a person a city bus driver or an airline pilot when they have multiple DUI's. And you don't let someone walk around with a gun that kills people deader than hell and the authority to use it at their discretion when they aren't smart enough to beat a 9th grader at a math test. The smarter you are, the smarter your decisions will likely be. Otherwise... might as well make these fucking 9th graders cops. Have you SEEN these fucking kids today? The LAST motherfuckers you want running around with guns and an implied sense of authority over everyone. But it's basically what we already have in some places.

I have this to add and transition from Sgt Dicklick's post...

http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/02/politics/mike-huckabee-transgender-caitlyn-jenner/

Huckabee: I wish I could've identified as female in high school gym

ROFLMDOM#@EO@#MO@#M

I understand huckabee's attempt at humor, but hes a dumbass... rofl!!!

We should just make bathrooms integrated already, it looks like the only path to satisfy everyone's concerns. It will be strange at first, but people will get used to it.

Dicklick's article is interesting, i just wonder if this new caitlyn personality will stay a woman for the rest of its life.

For me the whole trans gender transexual blah blah stuff is all a mind fuck. No human is just 1 identity, we all are multi. I am 2d when it comes to quake, but that doesnt mean 2d becomes dominant and takes over my whole life.

But i guess for some people, personality dominance shifts and you get this circus. crazy world.  :dohdohdoh:

Speaking of Bruce Jenner, I heard this song and couldn't help but to laugh even though it's very crude.

While I think Bruce is one fucked up dude, he can do whatever he wants.
What I don't see is why he is front page news and people are throwing big money at him for interviews, articles, and mag covers.

The biggest  :WTF: is him winning awards for this shit.

PS - 2d used to be a man.  :ubershock:  Maybe not a man, but male gender.
