Seems like the regurgitation of what is in its essence a traditionally-cherished dumb idea, simply taken to its logical (and self-evidently stupid) conclusion:

Compare that to someone responding in the comment section:

While I strongly disagree with [Robertson's] example, his point is that God is the foundation of morality. You can say all you want "I don't need God to have morals", but the fact is any sense of moral right you have has its roots in God's standard of morality. Without God, there is no morality. Why is murder wrong? Because GOD has placed value on human life and declared it to be wrong. Without God, murder cannot be wrong.

What numpty here has stated is in principle indistinguishable from Robertson's comments; numpty merely lacks the courage of his own convictions to take this popular dumb idea to its logical conclusion in the explicit manner provided by Robertson.

So, kudos to Robertson, I guess, for owning it.

Frankly I'm almost more annoyed by the numpty types who routinely spout this sort of nonsense without bothering to think it through.

On the other hand...

Not saying I agree with him. But it's not like he's going out and saying this shit publicly. He says this stuff in his church. People are willingly going into that place knowing that they're probably gonna hear this kind of thing. In fact, 98% of them WANT to hear this kind of thing, otherwise they wouldn't be members of that church. Somebody doesn't like what he has to say? Well it may be the dumbest most idiotic thing ever uttered, but he's not standing out on a street corner yelling it. Someone makes the choice to go into the church and hear him say it. Don't like it? Then don't go in. Some busybody shithead going in, recording it, then bringing it back outside to everyone just to stir shit... pardon me, but I don't give a single fuck if it offends anyone at that point. This is still America, and people are still free to have their own thoughts and opinions no matter how stupid and tunnel-visioned they are.

In a way, I prefer the Robertson version to the more slippery way the idea is traditionally expressed.

Who knows, Robertson's version might shock a few people in the pews into questioning that familiar bit of dogma.

The core problem here is: when you decide ahead of time that morality can only exist because of belief in a God or more simply that this God created morality from nothing and no other thing could make morality exist, any further efforts to "prove" a point logically using this "fact" are wasted as you've already thrown logic right out the window and you'd be, as the Christians would put it, building a house on sand.

When you attempt to create a proof, you define the various assembled parts of this proof PRIOR to creating your logical conclusion based on them. It's as true with philosophy as it is with trigonometry.

In the case of philosophy though, defining something by saying "it just is" is not sufficient, so if that's the best you can start with, it's a waste of time to go any further. It will only end in a ludicrous conclusion that doesn't reflect real life situations.

I'm glad people are pissed off by what Phil Robertson says. He's some duck call slinging redneck from Louisiana who went to college on a football scholarship, meaning he probably didn't have to study that hard (assuming he even finished, I dunno). Who the fuck is he? A genius? No. He's some dork on the talky picture electric TV box that people sometimes watch. He said something stupid? Cuz I was under the impression that was 90% of the premise of the entirely scripted "reality" show - them saying dumb hick shit. If it hurts your feelings or you care at all, you need to get a grip on life. Cuz when you turn the TV off, people like him cease to exist to you. Meanwhile other people physically around you every day say and do dumb shit, and most people don't have the balls to say anything about it to them. Everybody wants to live in a perfect world and a perfect country, but few people are willing to kick an ass or muddy up their stupid clothes to make it happen. Instead... people'd rather bitch and moan about unimportant shit like THIS.

Sure, Christians can be moral. So can atheists. It's just these haji fuckers like 2d that are godless and devoid of moral character. It's not his fault he's not white though. It's his mothers. It just is.

I would also like to add the big bang theory has never sounded right to me. Bill nye says the big bang was caused by an explosion that was caused by nothing that created atoms that came from nowhere. Humans evolved over millions of years from raining on a rock for millions of years.

That to me sounds very dumb yet is taught in school as being the truth. Evolution is not true, never was, has never been proven to be true, has not been observed in todays era.

Humans evolved over millions of years from a big explosion? really? Go stick your hands in an explosion and see if that evolves over millions of years. An explosion creates life? Look no further than 9/11, im sure the victims wish explosions caused life.

Life coming from non life? never in human history has this been observed...EVER. I have never seen life come from non life have you?

Everyone here would agree a piece of machinery like a computer is built for a purpose, and is highly sophisticated correct? So if i was to tell you your computer evolved over millions of years from an explosion, you would think i was crazy, because a computer demands someone created it. The human brain is a million times more advanced than any computer ever made, our bodies and DNA alone is very complex. One gram of DNA can store 700 terabytes of data, yet we came from an explosion millions of years ago?

Just because the majority think it's right doesn't make it so. If everyone voted to suspend the law of gravity, it doesn't mean gravity will stop does it?
