Why Quake

Of my own curious nature, how many of you play quake and "NO" other FPS? My question would then be why? What makes Quake so superior to the others in your opinion? I have been standing this discussion for a while with several individuals who have no intellect or common sense. For the record I am an RPG, Action Adventure, and 2nd Person Adventure gamer. I do play FPS, however, I play more modern FPS and in my opinion I prefer them because of the added realistic ability to interact with the environment in a destructive manner. A grenade would blast a hole in the wall and tear down buildings and bullets can fire through a wall. I am not the best FPS player nor do I claim to be, but I am adaptive to the different environments and controls. I am guilty of wanting a more realistic approach than that of Quake. I would think the newer the better with an FPS because more realistic stunts and realistic kick from weapons make a better game experience, and of course the graphics are am excellent touch. I can not say the same for the other genres. Well any opinions are welcome, please base your statements on fact. I do use citations and the likes to back my own.

Most 'Quakers' prefer the series because of its quick, strategy and arena based action.  All the quick decisions and things you need to keep track of (item timings, enemy positioning, weapon choices, etc.) make the game extremely versatile and unique.  Many different and new situations are constantly happening.

All this along with having advanced movement ( something that is very lacking in most if not all modern 'realistic' games ) creates a really great game with many layers of gameplay, allowing it to constantly grow and evolve.


These are my thoughts, anyone have any others?

I play many fps and i guess it comes down to personal preference? No it's not a realistic game but could in some ways be considered a science-fiction game?  Fun to play and mentally competitive are what makes quake what it is. Not realism.

You can't compare a old game with newer games. But then again, is up to you. I do prefer quake to other games because it is so customizable, is fun, and has a great community that is Tastyspleen. Tho, yeah, you can't shoot through walls, but... think again, you're supposed to be on the planet of the stroggs, and I suppose the materials are strong enough to handle gun fire?

I probably won't be able to put down why in its entirety because there's so many reasons but I can give you some of the more underlying reasons as to why I play and will continue to play this fantastic game forever, it starts with a little word called fun. Put simply, I have never enjoyed any other game as much as I have when playing Quake 2, something about the game is captivating. Some people might say well you've played World of Warcraft for x many years now and haven't quit! No, I haven't quit and probably still won't for awhile but there are so many aspects of WoW that I have intense hatred for and I spend a lot of time on that game harboring negative feelings towards it, yet continue to play it, I have never had these feelings manifest while playing Quake.

The physics do it for me a lot as well, the movement feels very natural to me and I find other games far too slow paced when I'm used to having a blast double jumping around everywhere strafe jumping at very fast speeds around maps, I haven't found this replicated anywhere else. even in Quake Live, purely on a physics basis it doesent appeal to me nearly as much as quake 2 does. And of course, there is the customising aspect of Q2 that has always held my attention, the sheer amount of maps and mods and paks and all sorts of other things mean you can pretty much guarantee you'll never have played everything q2 has to offer, even if some of it is shockingly bad   , there are some truly amazing works out there.

And finally, even though I could waffle on a good 20 page essay I think, on a personal note this was the first game I ever played with my father online, when he won a pentium 2 beast machine back in 'le day' at his workplace and loaded up q2 for the first time and we both played it online, well it was pretty fucking good to say the least, then after I moved in with my mother when they split up we didn't have the internet or a computer for a long time and I stopped playing it, when my father passed and we were clearing his house out I found the CD and that's how I got back into the game, so it holds some sentimental value for me.

Okay so not so finally, but actually finally now! The community is 100% the reason I think most people play it now, including myself, tastyspleen is a fan-fuckin-tastic community of people that's tight knit and strives to keep the game going, and does it so fucking well that frankly I think we underappreciate it sometimes and would be lost without it.

and i thought of something else, i've never ever ever ever ever ragequit in q2, but do it on the daily in wow. that's how good this game is.

There is so many reasons to list... but Im just gonna say:

Skill ceiling, quake has much more to the game play itself making the game actually take skill

Most quake players can kick up something like COD or halo and just own everyone because that shit is so easy :/ newer games are just shallow and aimed towards the lazy kids who want to turn on a game and get "good" in 5 minutes, where if any of those "good" halo or cod players jumped into quake, they would get raped hard for the first few months of play

Quake aims for pure fun, and a better sense of competition, newer "realistic" games just aim to look pretty and are mostly just point and shoot bullshit

I still play many other fps games, been playing bioshock lately, really enjoying borderlands, but as far as multiplayer gos, nothing even comes close to how good the quake series is... "Realistic" games are terrible multiplayer imo, and i laugh every time some one says they are good at one

you might not have noticed but noone particularly likes you either. I should mention people like VaeVictis are the scourge and only downfall of q2, but 90% of the dweebs that come chatting shit get run off in a short time. this ones a stubborn ass stain though.

Its the first game that I have played online and has held a special place in my heart. Plus I just get always drawn back into the game no matter what I'm playing necasue of the good people i like to hang with (Gator Adam Railwolf Defiant CHMod RottenRose Jehar ect ect
