The BBC Micro was an 8-bit home computer made in the U.K. in the early 80's.

There were certainly text adventure games written for it.

For once, Xbox Live Gold has a decent free game up for grabs this month.

The perfect game for October! Friday the 13th: The Game

You can play it online, either as one of 6 or 7 camp councellors or as Jason Voorhees, but so far I've just been playing it offline as Jason, trying to rack up some kills to get points in order to unlock the other more interesting versions of Jason, the other weapons, and other kill methods.

For starters, my PC is so old that there's no way it would run it. I'd have to play it on XboxOne, which I guess I'm fine with, although my aiming with the Xbox contoller vs a mouse would SUCK. Still, that's not a big deal, nor is it the major complaint I have about this game.

The monsters and even the human armor in that trailer all look FAR too over-elaborate. It doesn't look like Doom to me, it looks more like they ripped off their art ideas from Gears of War or some anime mech style crap. The monsters are supposed to be demons from Hell, not fucking robots that kinda look like demons. And whatever this story is they've got, it seems like it departs way too far away from what Doom originally was.

To me, what made the original games so popular and addictive was the "instant gratification" of it using a shotgun against imps. One or two hits and they blow apart. They don't need super-challenging enemies that are hard to kill (unless its a boss or a special enemy), they just need VAST NUMBERS of enemies that are easy to kill individually but their numbers are the challenge. If they can bring themselves to whore the franchise out by remaking it so many times, why do they feel like it's somehow immoral to keep the gameplay style consistent? I don't understand.

Finally at rank 1000. What do I get for my efforts? Nothing. Which isn't entirely true. I got screwed. I had about 27 million in my pocket when I logged on. I spun the daily casino prize wheel and got a 10% discount on anything purchased from the Warstock site. So I finally bought one of those ridiculously priced Hunter attack helicopters for about 3 million. It never showed up in my damn hangar. Had to file a support ticket with Rockstar. Hopefully they'll fix that shit and get me either my helicopter or my money back. 3 million in GTA Online takes way too long to earn to throw it away for nothing. (estimated wait time on my support ticket was AT LEAST 96 hours)

I got the 2 South Park games for Xmas, The Stick of Truth, and Fractured But Whole. Only barely started playing The Stick of Truth and it's already got me pissing myself laughing.

For example, when you try to put your name in, it doesn't matter what you put, Cartman says your name is "Douchebag".

I was super skeptical of that so-called "glory kill" mechanic. Figured they'd get old really fast.

But since the monsters drop extra health & ammo bonuses for taking them out that way, it provides a slight risk/reward tradeoff, and introduces a rhythm to the gameplay that I found more enjoyable than I'd have expected.

My gripes with DOOM 2016—a game I overall enjoyed—were the removal of QuickSave (replaced with checkpoints), and the gated arena style combat segments where you'd get locked in a room until you defeated all the baddies.

In this preview of the upcoming game, by a reviewer who's a longtime fan of the original games, it sounds like they may be easing up on the gated arena stuff in the next one, with larger more free flowing maps. (We'll see.)
