Doom 1.

 

Maaaaaaan. Hard to believe this game will officially be 20 years old next month (originally released December 10th 1993, according to wikipedia). If it were a person, it'd almost be old enough to legally purchase alcohol. Although if I remember correctly, I don't think I actually started playing it until maybe 1994 or 1995. I wanna say it was before 95, because I used to play it on my dads old 386 or whatever it was. I'm pretty sure it was a DOS based PC, because I think I remember having to type something like c:/doom/doom on a black screen to get it to start. Then maybe a year later, my old man got another PC, one with Win95, and then he ended up buying a copy of Ultimate Doom which had 1 extra episode to it. The PC before the win95 machine I think he just had the shareware version of the game which was just the first episode. But man, I spent so many hours playing that shit in my youth.

And it's STILL a great game even today. I think the simplicity of it was it's biggest success. With Doom3, they added too much frivolous shit in my opinion. The PDA thingy you carried around, etc etc. It had good points and bad ones. It was beautifully made, all the monsters were scary as fuck, and it did a good job of giving you a good jolt and scaring your pants off at times, but I think they should've stayed true to the original and just kept it at that. It should've just been a mindless murderfest with tons of blood and gore. Adding too much story to it kinda weighed the fun factor down.

Anyway, having a blast playing this thing. Apparently people have reworked the shit out of it and updated it. I ended up finding a little Doom1&2 thing on piratebay, and the client is called gzdoom or some shit. It's got a shitload of new updated options for it. It still uses 2d sprites for enemies, but it uses some opengl too for imp fireballs, lighting, etc. I never actually got around to playing Doom2 when I was a teen. Looking forward to finally being able to experience it. So far I've played through episode 1 and 2 of Doom1.

It is DEFINITELY still a great game! It's not Q2, but nothing is Q2.

Lately I've been playing mostly Diablo II, bit of Path of Exile, some Rome Total War and a little spot of Age of Empires Online. Sad the servers for that are gonna shut down in July.

IMO:

Doom 2 single player >> Q2 single player
Q2 multiplayer >> Doom 2 single player

I find Q2's SP too dry. The aliens/monsters are too dull and I found the AI to be far less challenging than in any of the Doom games.

Doom was already fun to play. But if you're bored with it, just turn up the gore factor by installing this mod and BADA-BING, it's fun all over again. It's a "mod", but it's more like an enhancement. It gets rid of the puny pistol and replaces it with an automatic assault rifle. It also speeds up the enemies. Imp fireballs fly a little faster, all the enemies move faster, the imps can jump at you and claw the shit outta you if you get too close. Makes it more of an actual challenge. I already played through all 4 episodes of Ultimate Doom 1, but I went back through most of episode1 with this mod loaded, and it made it 10 times more fun.

It's kinda weird that it's taken me about 20 years to finally get around to playing Doom2. I had played the first 1 or 2 levels of it years and years ago on a PC hooked up at a Best Buy or something, and all this time I always thought they were basically the same game, just different levels. And that's kinda true. But the additions of the double barrel shotgun and new enemies makes quite a difference. The enemies in Doom1 were all slow and easy to dodge and take out as long as you didn't have 80 of them all surrounding you and shithammering the piss out of you at once. Most of the added enemies in Doom2 were actually a little easier to kill. Like the tan colored Baron of Hell (whatever its called) and the small Spiderdemon. The Pain Elementals aren't so bad if you hit em with chaingun fire and keep them from spitting out flaming skulls. The Archviles are pretty tricky. They move pretty fast and force you to run like hell before they blow you up.

I gotta say, the map design in Doom2 is better than in Doom1. More interesting puzzles involved in it. I guess in the Doom engine, they couldn't have floors stacked on top of one another, or at least not too many. I guess they were limited with what they could do with map design in that aspect, but they still made great use of the space they COULD use and kept it very interesting. Also like how they always hid crowds of enemies behind walls that would get released by different trigger points. Adds some good scares here and there. You'll be picking up a box of ammo or something in a corner, and it'll trigger a wall to slide down when you aren't expecting it, and it'll jolt the hell out of you, haha!

So glad people still take the time to toy around with these old Doom games. Also good to see that these updated versions of it don't completely change the game beyond recognition. I've seen other reworked older games and they did nothing but completely fuck them up.

I remember running into issues trying to put multiple stories/floors years ago when I was making maps for Duke3d in the old build editor so I think you may be right about that in Doom since I think it was even more rudimentary. There were workarounds but they were a pain and if you wanted to give the illusion of multiple floors on top of each other you had to do some elevators that actually teleported you to a different room that wasn't actually on top of the other.

Played through shadow warrior and suddenly my mouse movement in q2 is erratic and way too fast. And trying to fix that affected the mouse movement in skyrim...

I picked up the independent title Starbound last week as a pre-release beta and for an unfinished game it's amazing and really fun.
Totally worth the 15 bucks on steam.

It resembles terraria a bit, but it has sooo much content and tons of worlds to discover, loot, dig up and build stuff on.
You get a handful of character species to play as, and your goal is pretty much to fuel your starship and explore the galaxy star system by star system meeting new people, exploring rich and colorful biomes on different types of world and generally digging up all sorts of shit all the way down to the planet core in your quest for raw materials and new loot.

All told, I'd pay 15 bucks just for the really awesome original music score.

He can't be let go from his job unless he quits, which is ridiculous since pretty much every other job and even unskilled labor jobs would fire you in an instant if you admit you smoked crack or used other drugs.
