First heard of Dream Theater back in middle school when another dude in my class brought an album to class. Was starting to get into death metal at the time, so it sounded like more mainstream hair metal bullshit to me at the time. Never gave it a chance.

Heard people talk about it over the years, how great they are, how great John Petrucci is. They were one of those bands that had a new album every 10 to 12 months, it was just too much to keep up with.

Anyway, fast forward to today. Was bouncing around youtube, came across this, didn't immediately skip it... eh, I Kinda like it. This song in particular is really good. Might have to listen to them a little more, not too bad.

I've been a guitar nerd since I was a kid, always read all the guitar magazines, saw his name in there plenty but never actually heard anything from him.

20 seconds in and I already like it. Reminds me a little of Frank Zappa from around the same period.

70's was probably my favorite decade in music. The keyboards, the guitar sounds from that period, how effects pedals were starting to become the norm, especially things like the Phase90 which was used by country folks like Waylon Jennings as well as rock and roll players.

His most influencial period was the early 70s, with his band Mahavishnu Orchestra, featuring Jan Hammer on keyboards and Billy Cobham on drums, they pretty much defined the Jazzrock/Fusion - genre there.

Give *The Inner Mounting Flame* (1971) and *Birds of Fire* (1972) a GO, you won't regret it.
Personally, I also like *Apocalypse* from 1974, with a different lineup and support from the London Symphony Orchestra.

Listening to or watching or both.....

Rick Beato scored an awesome three hour interview with Brendan O'Brien on his youtube channel.  A must watch for sure. Even though it's right at 3 hours long, I was so engrossed with the content that I have watched it twice!    :righteous:

Ive found that music Ive liked was usually music I didnt at first care for.  The more you listen, the more you tend to like it.  Hence a lot of Type O Negative stuff that I am now a big fan of. Dream Theaters drummer...best of all.

Ive found that music Ive liked was usually music I didnt at first care for.  The more you listen, the more you tend to like it.  Hence a lot of Type O Negative stuff that I am now a big fan of. Dream Theaters drummer...best of all.

I posted a Miles Davis song up there too. For years I've always thought of Miles Davis as "fashionable douchebag music" because... just my bitter spiteful opinion, but there's just certain people who try to achieve a certain identity through claiming to like certain music. By saying they like Miles Davis, they wanna look hip and classy.

For the longest time, I ignored jazz and wrote it off, but the older I get the more my attitude and tastes mellow out a bit, and I finally gave Miles Davis a chance ("Let's see for ourselves what everyone keeps talking about."). I listened to what is considered his #1 best album, Kind of Blue (1959), and I absolutely LOVE it, it's fantastic, it's everything a classic jazz album should be. So then I thought as much as I love that album, surely he'll have a lot more stuff to love.... NOPE. :D I went through most of the discography. The stuff right before that period in 1959 is slightly okay, but not nearly as good as kind of Blue. And everything he did from about 1961 onwards I do not like AT ALL.

I've always loved Type O Negative, and Carnivore too, which is what a lot of their early stuff came from. Unfortunately, it's kinda hard to listen to some of it now, particularly October Rust, because that was the album I listened to so many times while dating someone... it all fell apart in a bad way, she did me dirty, etc.  Love you to death, that was kinda our song, used to really like it, can't hear it now without wanting to kick a hole in the wall. Fuckin sucks when someone can ruin a perfectly good song like that. :dohdohdoh:

Yes, I too, with age have grown to appreciate and enjoy music I dismissed in my younger stages. In the beginning, if it wasn't Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Judas Priest or the like, I had no interest. I won't claim it's just wisdom that grew over time, but more an open mind that allowed me to appreciate things I missed musically due to my ignorance in previous times. Maybe that IS wisdom.  i have listened and learned much thanks to the www.  I like my crow smoked and barbequed, thanks.
