Was out yesterday in the evening trying to spot some coyotes to stalk and plug with my old 22 Springfield rifle. Didn't spot any coyotes, but did run into a small pack of about 5 wild hogs. Was kicking myself for not bringing a bigger rifle. Didn't take a shot at them, instead I just ran them off. A 22 would've only barely wounded one, they got pretty thick hides and I suspect 22's won't put one down unless you hit it in the brain. And since I don't have a scope on my 22, a headshot from the distance I was at would've been impossible. Just in case you don't know, I believe these wild hogs can be found in most states, and they are absolutely A-OKAY to shoot any time of the year with no limit whatsoever. They do shitloads of damage to crops and farmland down in South Georgia, and a couple of my friends usually shoot a bunch every year to roast up. They reproduce like fucking rabbits though, so it's nearly impossible to keep them managed which is why they have no limit on them. If you see one, FRAG THAT SUMBITCH! Otherwise you're liable to have 5-10 times as many next year.

they're seasonal in NC / not as much of a problem... but yeah, there's plenty in Georgia.. Buddy of mine goes to his cabin in Georgia and finds them living under the porch and stuff. His dad apparently took out an entire hoggy family underneath the cabin once, just blindly firing a 12 gauge 3x while they were having a little pow wow.

I don't really have the time to sit out there all damn day in a ground blind waiting for a pack of them to troll through whenever they decide to show up. Even if I did have the time, I wouldn't want to. June is just around the corner, which means these lovely sub-90 degree temperatures are gonna be a distant fond memory, and probably until late August it's gonna be nothing but 95-105 degrees with 90% humidity or better. Definitely NOT the kinda weather I wanna be sitting out in the middle of for no good reason. I know next to nothing about their movement and feeding patterns, which means it would take probably a month of constant scouting and stalking just to get their habits nailed down. Fuck that shit. My neighbor has some old gigantic steel bear traps that should do the trick. MWAHAHAHAHA!

They are a problem now and getting worse in some areas of Mississippi.  So much so, that there is no season or limit.  It is amazing to see the damage a herd(?) can do - almost like a bulldozer went through.  During the Mississippi River flood last year they were getting stranded and our Dept. of Wildlife encouraged hunters to take full advantage of it.
Some folks train and use pitbulls to track and hold them 'til the guns get there (one of the few good reasons to own a pit bulldog in my book).  Others trap them and feed them corn for awhile to mellow the wild taste and turn them into sausage. I don't have any near me.  And from what I've been told you need good rifle/bullet selection to penetrate their thick hides.  I don't think I'd want to be on the ground and wound a big one and just make it mad!

Alright, I'm double posting in an attempt to catch Focalor in post count.  I have been noticing more crows in the last year or so and they seem to be a little less wary of humans.  My wife told me she witnessed them getting in my neighbor's garbage this morning.  They scattered some bags and other stuff.  Years ago, I think they were hunted more often and considered as pests by farmers for several good reasons.  Nobody I know hunts them anymore.  I can't shoot at them with a .22, so maybe the Chinese .17 pellet rifle would work.  I hate wasting shotgun ammo on something I won't eat.  :D  Or maybe I make a bird trap per the Foxfire book.

Instead of fearing the Zombie outbreak, maybe we should fear the crowvolution.

Triple post...watch out Focalor...coyotes are a problem.  They almost killed my big dog last year.  I hear them but almost never see them because they roam and howl at night.  Somebody here has some expertise at calling them in for a shot.  Speak up for the sake of humanity.    :rocketleft:

Since I started capping a couple of them a few years ago, they've learned to be WAY more cautious about where they tread around here. Haven't really had much of a problem with them since, but I do hear them howling more often at night this past year. For quite a while I didn't hear them or see them at all, but I guess they've decided to start coming back around again.

They make calls that supposedly work to lure them in, and I've seen them work on hunting shows on TV, but I've never gotten one to try out for myself. I've also seen calls used in tandem with the battery powered lures that are basically a fake coyote tail on the end of a semi-flexible stick and it spins around. I guess the idea is that the call sounds like a distress cry and the coyote will come to investigate the noise. How I find them is I'll be spending a couple hours scouting around the property looking for deer tracks along probable routes that animals might take and I accidentally stumble across a bunch of tracks in some dried mud. The first time I came across them, I thought they were left by dogs, but I saw there were a too many of them to be dogs. Nobody around here lets their dogs roam free, nor have I ever noticed a pack of stray ones that large roaming about, so I figured they had to be the coyotes I'd been hearing making tons of noise late at night. So I just kept looking and looking every day until I narrowed down where I thought they had been coming in from, and eventually I stumbled onto a clearly cut trail that led to a den. I knew it right when I spotted it. There was fresh piles of shit scattered about and it was about 20 foot wide area with nothing but dirt, and they had dug out a place under a fallen oak tree. I didn't approach it once I spotted it. I moved back off the trail a little bit and knelt by tree. Loaded one up as quietly as I could, and just waited to see what would happen. Didn't want to go running up to it, didn't know how many were in there or if they'd come out and attack me as a pack, so I just waited and watched. Sat there for a good 45 minutes before the sun started going down, at which point an adult female came out and I started hearing a few more stirring around in the hole. I stood up slowly, and that's when I saw ANOTHER one on the other side of the tree trunk. Didn't know how long he'd been there, but there was ANOTHER burrow on the other side of the tree. I didn't wanna have to walk all the way back to the house in the dark, and didn't wanna miss a chance to clip one, so I went ahead and took the shot on the female laying out closest to me. Tagged her in the head, threw the bolt back and loaded up another one as quick as I could and tagged the male on the other side of the tree right through his lung. He scampered about 10 feet and fell over. Right after that, a few more came charging out of the holes, one headed for the trail going right beside me. As I loaded up one more, he noticed me and darted off the other direction. I took the shot on him but I doubt I hit him at all, didn't see any blood trail when I went looking afterwards. The two I shot, I left laying there. Came back a week later with a 40rd 9mm full auto pistol.  Figured if they were dumb enough to come back, this time I'd be ready to spray them all. Yep, stupid fuckers came back to the den. This time I got right up as close as I could. They heard me and started filing out, clipped another one 3 times in the ass and dropped him, clipped one more probably once but him and two others made it away alive. Dunno where I hit him, but there was a definite blood trail, so he probably died later that night. Since then, really haven't had a problem with them anymore.

So honestly, I don't have much advice to lend on how to call them in. Just gotta take the time to stalk them quietly during the day. I guess they do most of their hunting and moving around during the night, but they still move around during the daylight hours some too. Just gotta be really quiet and keep your eyes and ears open. Dunno how keen their sense of smell is, but they seem to be a little easier to sneak up on than deer. Then again, I have run across deer in the woods before even though I wasn't sneaking around. I guess the best advice I would give you is to just take note of which direction you hear the most howling coming from at night and then try to sneak up on them during the day. If you happen to find where they bed down and can't get a shot on them, at least you'll know where to go looking later, maybe even set some traps around that general area.

depends on the area whether animals are like that. deer are way more skiddish/wild in some places than others, same with foxes, coyotes, etc.. There's just a bunch of examples, and i'd be inclined to think that something from the dog family would exemplify this with high contrast. so yeah, more of an adaptation/evolution thing therefore geographic dependent, opposed to coyotes being dangerous pests as a rule.

there's a bunch of examples of that though, some places seagulls tear open trash bags making unbelievable messes, then some coastal areas people wouldn't even know what you're talking about.

Tis the season... for hunting. Actually archery season opened back in the first of September here in Georgia, but I didn't really get a chance to do any hunting. Primitive weapons season is on all this week still, so maybe I'll carry along a shotgun with me if I go out this week. I was out in the treestand this evening and doing some scouting around, but didn't see anything. Checked my trail cam and had a few shots of does and a couple bucks. I suppose the Georgia DNR has seen a pretty sharp increase in the doe population, because they upped the doe limit to 10 this year, which is GREAT, because last year I saw a ton but only ended up taking 1. Between me and my roommate, we should be able to keep the freezer nice and loaded up with backstraps, especially once rifle season starts which is this Saturday through January 1st.

Also kinda wanting to try a little bear hunting this year. Unfortunately, there aren't many bears around my house, so I'm gonna have to truck my ass a little more up into mountains to do any of that in one of the WMA areas, which means the chances of success aren't gonna be very high. Of course I'm not crazy enough to try it with a bow just yet, so I'll definitely be bringing along my .308, because if I come across a shooter and take a shot on one, I want it dead NOW, not after it's sliced me to ribbons with its claws.
