Focalor, that is one of THE FINEST hunting rifles you could have chosen (especially in .308)! I hope to one day own one....too much other stuff to buy first.

Now you need to learn how to reload; your hand loads will be even more accurate and effective than the factory stuff. Best of all...no store needed.

I've got a bro that makes his own 9mm and 357 magnum ammo, I'm sure I could get him to make 308s if I ever wanted him to. Being that I'm such a miserly tightwad, I'm sure I'll get around to it on my own eventually, especially with how much ammo costs these days. 20 bucks and MORE per 20rd box.

I'm using cheapy American Eagle FMJ rounds for practice ($13). For hunting, I got a couple boxes of Fiocchi hollows ($30). I saw other brands that were even higher than 30. If the bullets cost more per bullet than the beer that was in the beer bottles you're shooting at, I don't think I wanna shoot it.

Niece got a deer this year, with a bow! She's maybe 13-14 years old. I was impressed.

Don't think they made her clean it, maybe the next one.

My roommate butchered up the doe I got last year in the basement by the rollup door. We had a huge sheet of plastic laid out, and he STILL managed to get blood all over the place.

My roommates brother is supposed to be coming over in the morning, gonna be hitting the woods all day tomorrow looking for some shit to kill. Turkey, deer, pheasant, don't matter, we'll kill it all. Have every intention of having something fresh for lunch on Turkeyday.

Kinda sucks that I went ahead and bought a turkey for tomorrow. My roommate took the head off a turkey hen with his dads old Winchester .45 lever action. I need to see if I can get a pic of it sometime, he says its more than 100 years old. We got the hen soaking in some kinda milk concoction in the fridge to get the gamey taste out of it for tomorrow. Probably gonna cook the storebought turkey in the oven and do the one he bagged this afternoon outside on the smoker grill. Had a half-way decent probably 8 point 115"-125" buck come in front of the blind tonight, but I passed on him hoping something bigger was following him. Probably gonna get back out there before dawn tomorrow morning and see if I can't catch him coming back again. Threw out almost a whole bag of deer corn around my homemade ground blind. Dunno if anyone else is gonna wanna join me in the morning, this morning was a little miserable. Rained like hell last night, ended up sitting in mud most of the morning. Wasn't exactly a party trying to do some spot-n-stalk later that morning with 20 pounds of cold mud in my ass crack.

Success!!! It finally stopped raining long enough to make morning hunting not so miserable. Got out about an hour and a half before first light this AM and got set up in the ground blind. Sat there forever and didn't think I was gonna see anything. Then around 8:15 this nice huge buck steps out into the field. Never seen him before on the trail camera, he looked like probably a 8 point. Took the shot with my .308, pegged him just behind the left shoulder and watched him sprint off into the woods. Waited about 30 minutes and then got out tracking him down. Might should've waited longer, but I was so excited to finally nail my first buck that I couldn't help it. He went maybe 100 yards before crashing in a bush by the cow fence. Turns out he's actually a 10 pointer. Got him back to the house and measured up his rack, and he measures 151 and 3/4 inches. It's a little longer than it is massive and thick, which is great because I plan on taking him to the taxidermist down the road after Xmas and then mounting the head over the fireplace in the great room. I can't WAIT to get this bad boy on my wall, he's gonna look awesome. And I can finally take down this huge naked woven-twig wreath I got up there now.

Good for you....that .308 is a proven weapon, AND it takes a steady aim.

If you're not going to eat the antlers, let's get to the meat of the matter......sausage, tenderloin, back strap, steaks, ground venison, ....what you gonna do with the important stuff?

a nice white tail buck my brother killed 2 days ago but we skinned it yesterday

was shot with a 7mm and is hung up ready to get skinned.

It ain't too hard to shoot at all. It's got some recoil to it, but it ain't what I'd even classify as "considerable" recoil. I really couldn't take the shot from inside the blind without cutting a slit in the side of it, so I had to slip out the back and crawl beside the tree to take the shot from a laying position. Makes it a WHOLE HELLUVA lot easier to send the round exactly where you want it. I'll usually just make a fist to rest the front of the rifle over, turn it whichever way to get pretty close to the pinpoint where I want it, then squeeze or relax my fist to fine tune it. I was hoping to send it off to the taxidermist and let HIM butcher it up, but he won't be at his shop until Tuesday, so we're gonna slice and dice the old boy here at home again. Not gonna do it in the basement again, that was just too much of a mess. Gonna hang him off the underside of the back porch for skinning and butchering. I can't find anyone with a chest freezer large enough to put the head in, so I guess I just gotta have a rotting stinky deer head in my basement until Tuesday. Hopefully it'll still be alright for mounting by then.

My roommates doing all the cutting, he's pretty good at it. I told him to cut some steaks pretty thick. Dunno how thick they'll be, can't really tell. This guys packed on some pretty serious winter weight already (198 lbs), so I can't really tell how much muscle mass he's got. If the leg bones are thick enough, I might make something with them, maybe some knife handles or something.

Awesome dude... I was eating some deer tenderloin chunks a few days ago, marinated in a sauce similar to NC BBQ(it was vinegar based, but dark in color.. had various peppers/spices for a nice kick), then cooked medium to medium well.....

Holy shit, it was so good.

it got gutted right away , but was left a night in the garage because it was too cold. My brother put a bag of ice in its belly for extra security.

I could've gone with something like a 270 or a 7mm, but I wanted something a little more devastating. 30-06 or 308 is pretty good, even if you aren't quite as accurate as you want to be, it's gonna cold cock the piss out of it and drop it before it can run half a mile into the brush.
