Not a gun but it looked deadly enough to post  :bananaw00t:

Picked me up one of these wonderful little gadgets yesterday.

http://www.bushnell.com/products/rangefinders/legend-1200-arc/

Tried it out a little bit yesterday afternoon in bow mode with my Mathews z7 compound bow to test the angle compensation feature. I shot from my 2nd story back porch down to a target I had set up beside my tomato garden and nailed it dead center. Had my friend pick it up and sling it even further away, used the rangefinder with angle and range compensation to find which pin I needed to aim with and AGAIN hit it perfectly. Haven't tried it with a rifle yet. If you bowhunt, GET ONE OF THESE! It's worth every penny! I paid $350 at Bass Pro.

I'm hoping to get one of these in the next month or so... Just need to line up a pistol safe.

My chick has been wanting to do some target shooting and I figured why not get a 1911 in .22LR.
Hopefully it will help develop familiarity with the platform, without making her afraid of the kick to start with.

I'll step it up to a .45 with the next one.

Looks nice   That's perfect for learning all the mechanics,  great price too.

My wife does fairly well with everything we have put in her hands.  Nagant, 9mm, .45, and a few shots with a .44 magnum.
Doesn't have her own yet,  was looking at compact 45's.   Gonna be awhile,  maybe tax time  :-\

I wouldn't mind having a 22 like that one myself. The one I got is a crappy old heavy assed Japanese or Korean piece of junk with a slide made like a fat solid block of steel. 22's aren't supposed to kick very hard, but the action and weight of the slide in tandem with tiny round tapered barrel makes it drift up. Half the time it jams because the gas isn't enough to open it all the way. But I bet a good long heavy 1911 barrel would probably make holding it level even one handed virtually effortless.

that was definitely my thinking on it:

light rounds from a heavier gun with big fat grips and you can't fail to keep it steady and on target.

just got some pics from my uncle in Montana from his last hunting trip.
Judging by the flash flare in the moose's eye, he got way too close to it for comfort.

Haha! Dunno that I'd ever want to hunt moose. Hard enough dragging a whitetail doe half a mile through the woods, I don't even wanna think about how much of a pain in the ass it would be to drag a gigantic bull moose a few miles through the woods in the freezing cold.

Thought I'd post this warning for anybody with a 30-30, because they are very common.  I keep one in condition 3 (full magazine, empty chamber) handy in case I need it.  I live in the sticks, so don't worry about shooting a neighbor through a wall, etc.  I make it a practice to rotate an inspect/fire/clean routine of my weapons. I pulled the old 30-30 out of it's spot and dry racked the magazine and found four cartridges with bullets that had been set back from the constant spring tension.  In other words, the bullets had been seated deeper than they normally would.  It was Remington core-loct 170 gr hollow points and they were a bit old.  That should not happen in my book.  I reload and use a Lee "factory crimp" die and this would never be a problem. If I had fired this gun with the bullets seated too deep it would have increased the pressure to the point that it could have damaged the gun and me!      Beware.

Yep. I ALWAYS inspect each and every round for any high powered rifle before taking it out to fire. About the only "rifle" I don't necessarily do that with is my old tec9 9mm, although I supposed I probably should. Handgun rounds you don't have to worry about as much. I assume they don't really have enough punch to blow the chamber apart in your face. Although with my luck recently, I guess I will check EVERYTHING from now on.

Bow seasons been on for about 3 weeks now, and I haven't hit shit yet. I managed to grunt a 6 point probably 2 year old buck in to about 60 yds a few nights ago, but then it changed directions for some reason and wouldn't come back no matter what I did. I was rattling and grunting like crazy and it just wasn't interested in anything I had to say.

I'm heading down to Daytona FL with a bunch of folks for Biketoberfest in a couple weeks, supposed to stop off in Brunswick to visit my folks and meet up with some other people. Definitely bringing my bow with me. My girlfriend thinks I'm making her follow us in my truck so she can help haul all our bags of clothes and assorted gear for week. Nah. If we bag any deer, she's hauling them bitches back home. :D

Leaving either Monday or Tuesday, dunno yet. Supposed to be down in Daytona on the 12th through the 14th. One of our support clubs from Brunswick GA is having a booth down there. Supposed to bring a bunch of support merch for them to hock and just have a general presence over it. Sounded pretty boring, but I got tapped and it's mandatory, so whatever. If I leave Monday, probably gonna spend a couple days with a friend a little ways north of Brunswick. He's got miles of wide open corn and cotton fields and says he has more deer than he knows what to do with. It's not gun season yet, so hopefully I can get something in bow range. Haven't had much luck around my house so far this year. Been out in my blind and the tree stand several mornings since the season opened but never see anything. Seen a few shooter bucks in the evenings though, but haven't managed to get any to come in range. I tried moving the ground blind over closer to where I've seen them strutting through, but since I did that, now I don't see ANYTHING anymore. Pretty disappointing. I grow a little corn all summer and leave most of it out there for them to feed on, and they DO, but hunting season rolls around and now they won't visit anymore.

That's pretty awesome.  My dad bought me a clinometer/compass combo called a Suunto Tandem for Christmas a few years back.  I have never used it but once to test out the fact that it worked, and I was excited that the Dish Network installer had one as well.  My Dad is 100% Finnish so he is usually pretty excited about "Finnish" merchandise.

Might look into getting a new or used deer rifle pretty soon for gun season, something really nice like a Browning bolt action probably. Also wanna get a good scope with an onboard laser rangefinder and angle compensator like the handheld Bushnell rangefinder I got. I dunno if they make them. Hopefully someone offers something like that. Would be nice to have something I can adjust in seconds flat and I know is gonna thread a needle every time.

Being a biologist and often in the field in unfamiliar areas, I usually depend on a GPS.  I still carry a Suunto compass - no batteries to fail!  They work well and are rugged.  Up with the Finns!
