I usually load up 12ga with an ounce and 1/2 or 5/8 if the wad size/shell permits, and I prefer 8s for dove.

Bluedot in the 35-38 grains range for bang.

You have to not shoot em too close tho if you have a full length barrel and a tight pattern on your 12ga.
I use a mod choke and a 28 inch barrel on a 12ga pump, so I've seen them get splattered if I'm too trigger happy.

I learned to let em get out there an extra second or you dont end up with anything left that's big enough to eat.

I'm going out for whitewing and mourning dove this weekend in Parker, AZ. Just in case the hunting is shit this year I can always go bass fishin in the river.

So how did your hunt come out, Dervish? I got up an hour before sunrise Saturday morning and took my son to a dove hunt nearby. The birds were coming in real well, but I had my son on my left and another youngster to my right, so I passed on a lot of shots to give them a chance. We got enough for supper (wrapped in bacon and grilled, of course

). About 0930 we all went to the landowners house and chowed down on eggs, bacon, grits, biscuits and redeye gravy. Good times.

We shot on the colorado river indian reservation off of some milo and alfalfa fields, and we brought home 40 breasts, and ate some the first night on a little weber grill.

I was quite surprised by the turnout this year. There weren't a lot of hunters out to keep them up in the air for pass shootin, but the weather favored us and they were all kinda confused by a huge thunderstorm that swept thru the desert.
From about 6am to 11am we could wait about 5 minutes and 1-3 would fly out of the field towards cover and then back again in a few minutes. It seemed their daily pattern was thrown off a bit by the odd weather.

We stood on a corner about 20 yds off of 2 burned down field of seed that were about ready to get flooded. We pretty much shot from right by the truck, walking out occasionally to pick one up. Our take was mostly large mourning dove with about 10 or so white wing of varying size.

Got 2 of the eurasian collared doves that I'd never seen before, and they were tough to take down but had a lot of meat on them. They're almost the size of a pidgeon, and they fly high and fast.

While I was out there, I caught some largemouth bass in the river in the evenings and we scoped out some prime hunting spots for quail later in the year. While driving around in the truck with my chick's dad, lookin for spots, we came up on many cubbies of 20 or more quail and one morning we even scared up a young mountain lion that looked about 70 pounds while we were driving by.

I hadn't seen one of them in the wild since I used to mountain bike in my teens.

Up here in the foothills around my house, we have an ever increasing number of coyotes. When I go camping up on Blood Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest WMA, sometimes I'd see raccoons and deer but nothing else really,... but obviously there are bears around there. I've never run into one though, at least not in that particular area. A little farther north towards Hiawassee, I once spotted a black bear with 3 cubs that came out along the opposite treeline of the field we camped near. Usually when I'd go camping, I'd open the doors on my truck and play the radio, so the noise probably kept the critters away. Sometimes I'd bring my 45acp or the 12ga pump scattergun with slugs to use as bear and drunk hunter repellent. I never really thought about mountain lions though. I think we do have them in North GA, I know we have bobcats, which can be pretty vicious too. I'd much rather fight off a bear than a mountain lion, hehe. Bears are slower and usually run about 15 to 25mph in dense forest, much easier to shoot because of its size and speed. Mountain lions can jump long distances, climb trees very well, move a hell of a lot quicker, and they're smaller and harder to hit. I'd shit my drawers if I saw one that was doing anything other than running away from me. I'd shit a second time if I saw it's cubs nearby.

Here's a picture of the new world record whitetail. It was taken by the cousin of a co-worker's sister's, uncle's, best friend's, son-in-law's cousin's , neighbors ex-boyfriend's oldest nephew. Reportedly it will score 2603-1/8 by B&C standard and was shot in West Texas on a really windy day, 85 degrees down hill, around a curve at 900 yards with a 22 mag. Supposedly, this deer had killed a Brahma bull, two Land Rovers and six Jehovah's Witnesses in the last two weeks alone. They said it was winning a fight with Bigfoot when it was shot.

I have loads of whitetail deer around my home but sheesh, the most points I'd ever seen on one horn of a buck was 7, not 16+!

I'd love to see a deer like that!

Kinda rare to see one with 14 points. Usually if they get to be that old, they're a lot wiser and can smell trouble before they get into range of a hunter. Either that or they break a few tines sparring with other bucks.
