Okay, update.
Yeah, didn't get shit this past weekend. I have the worst luck imaginable. Sunday night, I was set up in a tree stand about 15 feet off the ground on one side of the field, my buddy who owns the land was set up in another stand on the other side of the field. I was scanning the tree line and I see a doe walk right past my friends tree. About 4 minutes later, a decent buck walks into the field on the trail of the doe. He drew and hit the buck, dropped it almost on the spot, it took about 8 strides and dropped, didn't even make it back to the trees. About 15 minutes later, I was continuing with using my grunt call when I hear twigs cracking behind me. This really nice 8 point was coming up from behind me towards the field in front of me. I had him ranged at 30 yds when I hit the grunt call again and stopped him. So I got an arrow notched and drew it... and my fucking rangefinder fell out of the stand. Hearing it hit the ground, I thought it had busted into a million pieces, so I let out with "Aw shit." The deer hears me and looks straight up at me, still standing there, haha. So I'm thinking, "Fuck it, go NOW NOW NOW." I let it fly, and no shit, the motherfucker jumps STRAIGHT THE FUCK UP AND OVER MY FUCKING ARROW, and darts off into the woods. Didn't even GRAZE the motherucker.
Fuck my life.
Anyway, HIS buck was a really nice one. 11 point non-typical with a drop tine on the left side, first non-typical he's ever bagged.

My uncle bagged a moose a week or so ago. I'll try to get the pic.
It apparently had some fucked up parasite in it's head that caused the antlers to grow deformed.
The fish & game guys kept it for a bit to do testing, bc it was that odd looking.

Curious about what medicine he uses for Moose. It's not something I would want to wound and make mad!

Looks like he popped it with a .30 cal.
He tends to carry a 10" S&W .44 revolver with, just in case something turns on him

Jesus, you weren't kidding. Never seen one like that before. Did anyone positively identify what the parasite was or could it have been something diet/malnourishment related?

They apparently get some sort of worm that works its way into the neck/head arteries and then grows.
I think it's transmitted from the deer in the area, but they don't get affected by it for some reason.
I'm not sure if I'd want to eat it knowing that.Â

Still haven't filled any tags this year yet.
Bow/primitive weapons season ended back on October 22. Kinda bummed about that. But we have an extended bow only season starting first week of January, so maybe I can bag something with a bow then.
Went this morning and picked up some new arrows. Was using these plain old aluminum shaft arrows, spent a little money on some carbon fiber ones. They seem to carry a little farther with less arc, probably gonna have to take my bow in before long to get my sight recalibrated for them.
Also picked me up a shiny brand new rifle for rifle season. Browning Xbolt 308. Got a really nice Bushnell Elite scope for it. Should be MORE than enough to drop some bucks. Shouldn't have a problem getting at least one buck for rifle season. Had one or two super nice bucks this year that I could've taken but were out of bow range or in a bad position to take a shot on. Shouldn't be a problem now.

mountain lions?
I've been in the mood for some deer and some duck lately... Might hit up a hunting club up north with my buddy since I'll be in jersey for thanksgiving.

It wasn't cheap by any stretch, but you can't beat Browning for quality and reliability. I was out this morning spending some rounds on some cut up oak trunks I painted circular tagets on. I had to jam big rocks around the trunks to keep them from rolling away. I'd hit one once or twice and it would start rolling off into the creek. Hit one and flipped it up on the flat side.
And I can't praise this angle compensating rangefinder scope I got enough. I'm hitting shit like a Marine sniper now. If I can see it with binoculars, I can send one through it's eyeball on the first shot.
My roommates been spending his evenings scouting along the river in town. Haven't see much of anything around the house, just a few does and a couple spikes. So unless shit changes, looks like we ain't gonna get crosshairs on the bucks we saw out in the corn field this summer. Should be able to get a doe before Thanksgiving though. Dunno if I'm go tree-swinging Thanksgiving morning again this year, probably gonna try to do it the day before then maybe have the vinison for lunch Thanksgiving day or something.
