it is better than anything matchox 20 ever released.

Haha, definitely. I've never really been that big of a Santana fan, they had a few good songs and an excellent all around band, but I've never been too overly impressed with Santana's playing. He definitely has a style of playing leads that's pretty individual but only because it sounds rather broken and haphazardly put together. Weird thing is, not all of them sound exactly that way, almost like he's infused some elements of jazz lead guitar playing into his latin style. Europa was a great one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBDLQZgntYE

I really can't think of anyone I'd rather have doing the vocals on that song who might do a good job. I think it would sound kinda boring without someone singing the vocal tune along with it. Otherwise, you'd just have to have a vintage dirty tone guitar or a horn section covering that part of the tune and then it would just sound like some crap they play on a smooth jazz station... which they do anyway, oh well.

Obviously this list blows the big one. ZZ top would probably be my answer if someone were to ask me for my favorite band. Badass music and even more badass beards..not to mention badass music videos....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VU4rRji7nc

A co-ed chain gang! ROFLMAO!

They aren't my "favorite" band, but Billy Gibbons is one of the best blues rock lead players ever due to the fact that he never really sticks to normal patterns of notes through a scale and really makes it sound interesting, kinda like how Slash from Guns N Roses does.

That's another guy they left off the list. HOW IN THE FUCK DO YOU NOT INCLUDE SLASH AFTER HIS SOLO IN NOVEMBER RAIN!?!?!?! FUCKING BLASPHEMY!!!!

A lot of people they have in the top 5/10 are awesome at guitar but it's so hard to rank them or give them a placing on the list in relation to other amazing guitarists... and rolling stone demonstrates that by doing a shitty job. I have to admit I almost stopped looking at the list after I saw a few names but George Harrison finally did the trick.

I think they did a great job putting Jimi Hendrix at #1. Stevie Ray Vaughan always did an awesome job covering Jimi's tunes, and the man could play all over a guitar until the strings sheered his fingertips off (which happened a few times and he glued them back on, no shit), but even SRV wasn't as good at breaking apart chords to make a bevy of chops the way Jimi always did on the fly.

Here's my favorite Tim Reynods song (doom which plays in harmony with the weapon in doom swaying back and forth)

This is what I'm talking about with entertaining with only the guitar.

Absolutely.

Coincidentally, anyone know where I can find that video of the Les Paul appreciation get-together that was held several years back that featured lots of famous Les Paul players like Slash, Zakk Wylde, Billy Gibbons, and Les Paul himself?

Pfft. still BS.

heres some of the great melodic guitarriffs songs they should have added:

Shine on your crazy diamond - pink floyd
Time - pink floyd
Comfortably numb - pink floyd
one of these days - pink floyd
have a cigar - pink floyd
something to say - Harem scarem
Love of my life - Queen
when the children cry - white lion
shot in the dark - Ozzy osbourne
I believe - satriani
In my dreams with you- steve vai

and of course Cliffs of Dover - Eric jhonson  *now thats old school*

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55nAwmVLQSk&feature=related

And going back on the top riffers , i also think megadeth should be on it.

As gay as 80's hair metal was (including White Lion), I gotta admit that Vito Bratta was actually a damn good guitarist.

Unfortunately, a lot of the guitarists in the metal realm don't get as much recognition for their abilities as they probably should, especially those from the largely underground genre of death metal which has actually seemed to come at least half way above ground in this past decade.

Some that I'd like to see get more credit in print:
- James Murphy (Obituary, Death, Disincarnate, Testament, Cancer)
- Bill Steer (Carcass)
- Chuck Schuldiner (Death)

Especially Chuck Schuldiner. The guy basically gave birth to the death metal genre. He was a total perfectionist when it came to his music and constantly changed the band lineup with studio musicians, all of which were absolute virtuosos of their chosen instruments. In his later years, he wrote a lot of really interestingly pieced together songs with tempo changes and odd timings that always sounded easy to follow even though they were kinda complex and unusual.

Wow, this list sucks... Even the readers of Rolling Stone gave it a 2-out-of-5 stars as a rating. But then again, what the hell do a small group of journalists know about public opinion?

...Stevie Ray Vaughan...

Interesting bit of trivia I just learned about.

From the wiki page for 80's soft rock musician Christopher Cross:

Cross was the original owner of fellow Austin guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan’s legendary “Number One” 1962/1963 hybrid Fender Stratocaster. Vaughan purchased the guitar at Ray Hennig’s Heart of Texas Music in Austin in 1974, only one day after Cross had traded the guitar for a Gibson Les Paul.

Although... I'm kinda wondering if that was a straight trade. A Gibson Les Paul is typically worth a good bit more than a Stratocaster.
