If you're insinuating that they can't really play those songs just like that in a live setting, then you've obviously never seen them play live. They do usually hire a 2nd guitarist for tours to thicken up the riffs and keep a rhythm guitar going while Trey plays the leads. I've always loved their sound, but especially since their 3rd album, Covenant. Pete Sandoval has a very unique sounding attack and style, and Trey's rapid picking and guitar tone transforms his guitar sound into something that almost doesn't even sound like a guitar anymore. Their whole Satanic image is a bit over-the-top, but their unique sound sells it flawlessly. I can't think of any other bands out there that sound exactly the same. Some come pretty close as far as drumming technique, but no one else plays a guitar the same way Trey Azagthoth does.

Or maybe you're just talking about the cheesy way metal bands tend to make videos where they play in flames and look pissed. Yeah. Death metal is still pretty "underground". I've seen a couple of decently financed death metal videos, but they were kinda "black metal" bands, so of course they stuck with the traditional crap.

No, I just think it would be difficult to be that over-the-top without being ironic. (In other words, push it a hair's breadth farther, and it might become Spinal Tap.)

If they can pull it off without irony, AND without unwittingly lapsing into self-parody, well... props to them.

I'm not into this type of industrial type dance sound. But there is something creative about this. I just can't put my finger on it.
MIA is Sri Lankin and the Indian type influences are everywhere. It seems to work. Some of her other stuff is really noise, atonal stuff with too much distortion. But she is original....

Down. One of my favorite bands. I love the bluesy jazzy hypnotizing sound of this song. This is why I love this group, even they all come from bands that stick to the traditional metal format, they aren't afraid to try different things and the end result of their studio work shows attention to detail and always sounds interesting. Moreso on their 2nd and 3rd albums, their 1st one was pretty straightforward metal throughout with a couple of exceptions.

Saw this live last year in in Vancouver @ the Commodore Ballroom. Best concert I've been to and an absolutely amazing venue. Great for live acts. The floor bounces with the crowd.

Sounds like they have a [F#m7th - B9th] thing going on there. That's a standard jazz type progression. Followed by a key change by moving the same chord fingering up 2 or 3 frets. Then back to original chords etc.
