I don't know a lot about Smashing Pumpkins but I stumbled on this one. Nice power riff to start it off. Sounds like it's dropped to C tuning. Also the floaty choruses in the middle work. I would have edited out the 15 second solo "Billy rant". Doesn't add anything to the song. Melissa is great on bass. Also this is in HQ.

I don't like the guitar tone at all. Sounds way too digital, almost like no preamp was used, just some fuzzy distortion with some tone controls on it run directly into a mixer. That sound is sometimes used in industrial metal and such, and I usually don't like it then either. I guess I'm just old fashioned and kinda partial to the midrangey growl of a saturated valve sound as opposed to some flat solid state tone with no balls. Hell, even a 100% solid state amp can sound like it's got some power behind it if it's worth a shit. That post-modern distortion sound or whatever you wanna call it is just always a bad idea in my opinion.

You're right on the digital glitz overtones. It could have been a more pure and rounder distortion. But I thought it was a killer riff. It sounds "new" because of the drop C tuning which isn't too common. The only other song like that I can recall is The River by Collective Soul. As far as the chorus I like the transition into that floaty ethereal thing, from the straight guitar riff. Billy is known for overdubbing LOTS of guitars in the studio for his songs. Maybe too many layers of stereo symphonic pedals. Or keyboards - who knows? On their live versions (YouTube) that section seems a lot more toned down.

The strange world of Japanese rock/pop. She's actually a good guitarist but who would buy this kind of music?

A great song from Ten Years After off their best selling album - A Space in Time. Shows what you can do with a simple blues progression in E. Interesting beginning with the strings...

One from Joni Mitchell in 1985. I like her early acoustic folk material so this electric album was a departure for her. But I really like the guitar work here and the bass line. Many key changes. Michael McDonald (Doobie Bros) supplies the other vocal.

A new rap song from Cypress Hill. Sounds somewhat familiar. I didn't know you could make an entire song from just the chorus of a 40 year old song:
